Featured Devotional | Time to Rest

When an international scholar visited a seminary in the US, he was surprised to see an American colleague gardening on Sunday.

Although they disagreed on how rest should be observed on Sunday, they both agreed on the importance of seeking to rest each week.

Reaching Out to the Family Member Who's Left the Faith

Maybe you have a family member who was once a professing Christian, and is now against the faith because of the hypocrisy they've witnessed within the family.

As the remaining believers, what can we do to redeem our households?

Featured Devotional | Wrestling With God

Often, on Saturdays in the 1980s, my brother and I watched professional wrestling on TV. We were mesmerized by the acrobatics and the seemingly super-human body slams that shook the wrestling ring.

🤼🏻‍♀️ The Bible records one incredible wresting match too. One between Jacob and God.

YMI Series—Prayer Visual | Prayer for When Work Seems Fruitless

We spend so much of our time at work each day, pouring hours of blood, sweat, and tears into that project or new initiative—so it’s no surprise that we often feel discouraged or disappointed when our work doesn’t generate the result we expected.

What can we do when our work seems fruitless, and it feels like our efforts have gone unseen and unappreciated?

Let’s ask God to give us the right perspective and the right posture in our approach towards work—and ask Him to help us remain faithful as we continue to work and entrust the fruit of our work into His hands.

Featured Devotional | Christ Revealed in Us

I’ve learned through various job and ministry experiences that being surrounded by others too long can often lead to exhaustion, anxiety, or stress.

There are other relationships, however, that create a sense of rest in our lives even though the investment in those individuals makes demands on our time and energy.

How we perceive love does not just apply to our relationships with other people, it also affects our relationship with God. One of the profound tenets of faith is that God is a God of love. He describes Himself as “abounding in love” (Exodus 34:6b), and this characteristic is referred to again and again by the biblical authors (e.g., Psalm 86:15).

We are assured of this truth not just because God says so, but because of how this love is embodied and expressed, time and time again through the person of Jesus Christ.

Why Do I Always Think I'm Not Good Enough

Our culture is two-faced about achievement.

On one hand, we prize success. On the other, we are suspicious about self-promotion, so we learn to be self-effacing, saying “I’m not good enough” when given praise or recognition.

We want to believe that's the healthy antidote to pride or boasting. But is it?

What is God's perspective?

Featured Devotional | Open Spaces

Dr. Richard Swenson in his book Margin writes,

We must have some room to breathe. We need freedom to think and permission to heal.

Our relationships are being starved to death by velocity. . . . Our children lay wounded on the ground, run over by our high-speed good intentions.

Is God now pro-exhaustion? Doesn’t He lead people beside the still waters anymore? Who plundered those wide-open spaces of the past, and how can we get them back?

There are no fallow lands for our emotions to lie down and rest in.

Does that resonate?

Featured Devotional | Rewards

When our children were young, my wife and I gave them money to buy Christmas presents for us.

But why not simply buy the socks or slippers ourselves?

God continues to work to this day, labouring in love to perfect us in the likeness of His Son.

The best bit is, God invites you to partner with Him in all that He does and delights in.

Lord, show us Your joy in the work that you do, so that our view of work may be magnified, and we'll be able to see the immense, multi-faceted goodness of all that we do. Revive our appetite for good work and to see true meaning and value as we observe the works of Your hands.

Featured Devotional | If Only I Had . . .

Even as a child, I can remember coveting things that other people possessed. One day I begged to take home a toy that caught my eye at my cousin’s house.

When my parents refused me, I cried and created quite a scene.

Introducing July's Theme: God’s Picture Perfect Plan

🎑 Trying to see God’s work where we are now is like looking at the back of an embroidery or staring too closely at a tiny patch of a painting. All we see are unsightly zigzag stitches or dark splotches of paint that make no sense.

We may not fully know now, but one day, for sure, we will see clearly how it all comes together, when we come face to face with Him who is the beginning and the end (Ref. 1 Cor 13:12).

This month, we want to think about what it means to change and grow, all while holding onto our unchanging and steadfast Father, the life-giving Creator and Master Artist who makes all things beautiful inHistime.

As we think back, may we encourage each other to see how we all play a part in His picture perfect plan.

Featured Devotional | Wait for Him

Typically, I merely skim my Facebook feed. But today I found myself taking time to reflect on a friend’s post that read:

Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.

We all enjoy being “chosen” for something, whether it's a friendship circle, or a community.

What if you had been chosen for something greater? Jesus has chosen you, adopted you, called you to be with Him before the creation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).

You and I are now part of God’s family, adopted into sonship, according to His “pleasure and will” (v. 5), that we may live holy and blameless lives.

𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬: Dear God, it can suck not being a part of a team or a friendship circle, or constantly being overlooked. But when I look at the bigger picture, I know that you have chosen me before creation, and I am valuable in Your sight. Thank You for giving me a place in Your family and Kingdom.

Featured Devotional | A Better Plan

Many years ago, my wife and I felt that God was moving us out of our comfort zone to ignite a new work within an established ministry. When we met with the ministry’s leadership, however, our plans were rejected.

I’ve come to learn that being married or having a successful career or a church community aren’t dreadful things to want. But if I couldn’t survive without them, I know I’ve made them my idols.

Since I left my relationship and returned to God, there’s not been a day where I haven’t felt an excruciating loss. But there’s also not been a day where I’ve gone to bed without peace. God has come through, without fail, in quiet and surprising ways to meet the needs of the day. He turns my attention to the beautiful things He already has given me—my family, close friends, the work that I have—and lets me feel His presence through them.

They aren’t consolation prizes, God tells me, but the very best things I know you need right now to heal. These things give me hope that I’ve not been forgotten.
