AMÉRICA LATINA EN 130 DOCUMENTALES.
Jorge Ruffinelli

‘Welcome to no-man’s land’ — “Everyone’s land, in fact.”: A firsthand account of the 30-year anniversary of the Zapatista uprising

The theater performance the Zapatistas staged for New Year’s Eve was a similar blend of ideological earnestness and mischief

Act Three laid out the threats now facing Zapatismo — from drug traffickers to manipulative aid programs — and explained the Zapatista restructuring announced weeks before. It insisted the announced dissolution of the overarching governing bodies was not a defeat.

Rather, the MAREZ and the JBG had been replaced with hyper-local assemblies called Local Autonomous Governments (GAL), which would make all community decisions via direct democracy.

All property would be held in common, all work and services organized collectively, and like-minded migrants welcomed to join the communities. The aim was to invert the pyramidal hierarchy, decentralize power and make decision-making faster.

The Zapatista uprising, 30 years on

(…) in the absence of de jure autonomy, the rebels of Chiapas have exercised “de facto autonomy” in the organisation of daily life in their territory. They control a highly politically fragmented area roughly the size of Belgium where they are trying to build a “different world” that is radically democratic, “anti-capitalist” and independent of the Mexican state.

The Zapatistas’ critique of the dominant model is articulated through action and developed over time. Their new emancipatory perspective aimed at “redistribution and recognition” is expressed both in their form of self-governance that seeks to “command by obeying,” as well as in their repeated intercontinental invitations to articulate struggles “from below and to the left”.

The Legacy Of The Zapatistas | Hannah Swoboda

A New Kind Of Struggle? In addition to inspiring the Mexican working class to take mass action, the Zapatistas were also a reference point internationally for a growing protest movement against neoliberalism.

This new anti-globalization movement began in the 1990s and culminated in the Battle of Seattle, a protest which united labor, environmentalists, and youth against the World Trade Organization in 1999.

In the wake of the collapse of Stalinism, many in this movement saw Zapatismo as not only a revival of struggle against capitalism, but a new type of struggle that would avoid the failures of the previous generation.”
