PhD Opening in Testing and Modeling of Adaptive Cruise Control Vehicles
The research lab of Prof. Danjue Chen at Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering at University of Massachusetts Lowell would like to recruit one PhD student to work on a recent grant sponsored by the National Science Foundation "Understanding the Impacts of Automated Vehicles on Traffic Flow Using Empirical Data" . Announcement can be found here: https://sites.google.com/site/danjuechen/?pli=1
In this project, we will (i) test the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems of different car-makers and their counterparts, regular vehicles (RVs), and (ii) formulate car-following models that capture the similar and differentiating features of ACCs and regular vehicles. The project will focus on data collection and model estimation efforts using Maximum Likelihood Estimation. This enables the novel applications of statistical inference methods (e.g., the likelihood ratio test) to test various hypotheses to assess the differences and similarities among different ACC systems and between ACCs and regular vehicles. In particular, the research will test if ACC systems from different car-makers differ from one another and from the RVs, and if they change substantially over time.
Conditions:
(1) I’m looking for students with (a) STRONG motivation to explore cutting-edge transportation problems and solutions, (b) good analytic capability and math/programming skills, and (c) good communication skills (oral and writing).
(2) Engineering/science/math background is preferred. Master degree is not required.
(3) Full research assistantship will be provided. The salary is about $1750-$2000 per month - some variation exists due to the flexible summer pay.
(4) Starting time: Fall 2019 or sooner.
(5) If you are interested, please send me an email (danjue_chen@uml.edu) with your resume and transcript (informal).
Why UMass Lowell? – It’s located in the big Boston area, one of the most well-developed regions and the easiest places to find a job. Most research conducted is at the cutting-edge, supported by the prestigious National Science Foundation, Department of Transportation, etc. The university’s ranking is improving dramatically, the third-fastest in the nation.
More about the research team? -Dr. Danjue Chen is an Assistant Prof at the Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. I obtained my Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology and B.S. from Peking University. I worked as a researcher at UC Berkeley and University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have published over 15 papers on the top journals in transportation. For more information, please visit my Website https://sites.google.com/site/danjuechen/?pli=1. Feel free to contact me if you have any question.
