The Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit (IIRU) is excited to launch a new webinar series: Contemporary Issues in Injury Prevention & Control. Our first in the series, Careers in Injury Prevention, brings together two world renowned injury prevention experts to share their experiences and offer their professional guidance:

- Dr. Margie Peden was the former Coordinator of the Unintentional Injuries Prevention unit (UIP) within the department for Management of Noncommunicable Diseases, Disability, Violence and Injury Prevention at World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. She has coordinated work in the areas of unintentional injury prevention (including road safety, drowning and burns prevention), injury surveillance/surveys, and alcohol and drug-related injuries. Dr. Peden has authored more than 25 manuals and has published more than 55 peer-reviewed articles.
- Ms. Gayle Dipietro was the Global Road Safety Partnership’s (GRSP) Global Programme Manager of the Bloomberg Philanthropies road safety initiatives from 2010 - 2016. Over the last 15 years, Gayle has provided relevant technical and practical road safety advice to Governments, corporate and civil society organizations in over 50 low- and middle-income countries. Since 2010, representing GRSP, Gayle also chaired a subcommittee (Pillar 4: Safer Road Users) of the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration.

The webinar is designed for current students and young professionals who would like to start, or transition into, a career in injury prevention. The seminar will address

To meet the challenges urban transportation systems face today and in the foreseeable future – from air pollution to congestion and infrastructure constraints – it is critical the transportation sector transforms to more shared, electrified, and automated modes. This transformation can unlock enormous levels of energy efficiency and contribute significant net reductions in the sector’s contribution to greenhouse gas and local air pollution and a dramatic shrinking of the vehicle population. The benefits of such a transformation extend well beyond the cars on the road and can include increased mobility access for more communities, new human-centric urban design options, and more livable cities. Technology companies, like Uber, are helping to drive a more sustainable future of mobility by developing more shared, electrified and automated mobility options and collaborating with cities and partners to unlock the benefits these transformations can bring.
