Unlike Yunnan or Hunan Taiwan is not known for pressed tea, especially hei cha. We've come across a couple of farmers, who are experimenting with pressed tea by making it different from Mainland Chinese teas. We brought you three tea cakes to try with us!

Pressed Black Tea

Pressed Hei Cha

Pressed Red Oolong

Let's explore each one and give feedback to the farmers together.

Ruby 18 White - Shou Mei Style

Sweet pea and birch tree juice meets a pleasant herbal bitterness of mint. A beautiful contrast to the pungent spices of Ruby 18 Black. Incredible, how 100% tea leaves can produce such varied flavours.

We're starting a new blog series "Faces of Taiwanese Tea" where we bring the spotlight to the people who shaped the Taiwanese Tea culture as we know it today. Our first Face is none other than 吳振鐸 - 台茶之父.

Wu Zhenduo’s tenure spanned decades of economic hardship, yet he steered the industry toward global prestige. Over 60 years, he researched and mentored with a tenacity that defined the era. By his 1984 retirement, after 37 consecutive years at the tea station, he had earned the title "Father of Taiwanese Tea." His legacy persists in the serrated leaves of Jin Xuan and Cui Yu, cultivars he engineered to synthesize the creamy, floral notes that characterize the modern Taiwanese palate.

Next on our list is Chang Nai-Miao (1875–1955), who was a legendary Taiwanese tea master who fundamentally shaped the island’s specialty tea industry. In 1895, he personally brought the first Tieguanyin (鐵觀音) saplings from Anxi to the Maokong region of Muzha, establishing what would become Taiwan’s premier production area for the variety. He became a national figure after winning the 1916 Gold Medal at the Taiwan Industry Exposition, where he successfully proved under government inspection that high-quality tea could be produced locally. There is much more to learn, so jump right in!

Liu Chung-sen, 82, is a national treasure at Chyuan-Yi Tea Studio in Lugu. For 67 years, he has mastered manual charcoal roasting with longan wood. His "slow fire" process, often exceeding 500 hours for aged teas, creates a smooth "water-soft" texture and profound "throat rhyme. His 50-year-old aged tea sells for 4900 € per caddy. Liu’s legacy continues through the 2025 Grand Champion victory of his successor, Liu Ru-chuan.
