✡️ Most casual political observers have probably never heard of Paul Singer.
That's by design. He is one of the most powerful men in American politics and he operates almost entirely in the shadows.
Singer is the founder of Elliott Management, a hedge fund now managing ~$72 billion in assets.
He turned a $1.3 million startup in 1977 into a financial empire built on one simple strategy: buy distressed debt cheap, then destroy whoever owes it.
His business model earned him the nickname "vulture capitalist."
He bought $20 million in Peruvian sovereign debt in the 1990s, sued relentlessly, and walked away with $58 million…nearly triple his investment.
A court confirmed the purchase was made with the explicit intent to sue.
His most audacious target was Argentina.
After the 2001 economic collapse, Singer bought distressed bonds for ~$117M, refused to join other creditors in restructuring, and litigated for years until he got a $2.4 BILLION settlement. A 1,270% return.
In 2012, Singer convinced a Ghanaian court to physically seize Argentina's naval vessel, with 220 crew members aboard, and held it hostage until Argentina paid up.
Singer's vulture capitalism doesn't stay overseas.
In 2015, he took an 11% stake in Cabela's, forced a merger with Bass Pro Shops, and gutted Sidney, Nebraska—the town where Cabela's was headquartered.
Tucker Carlson ran a devastating exposé on Singer in December 2019.
His verdict: "It creates nothing. It destroys entire cities. It couldn't be uglier or more destructive."
Carlson said he was warned repeatedly by Washington insiders: "Don't criticize Paul Singer."
Singer isn't just a financier but a political kingmaker.
The second-largest GOP donor in 2016, he has given millions to AIPAC and its super PAC, holds a seat on the Republican Jewish Coalition's board, and bankrolls the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
The FDD has been described by a former senior State Department official as a "fervent advocate for war against Iran."
Singer himself told the Jewish Funders Network in Jerusalem that Israel is the "only insurance policy all Jews everywhere can rely upon."
Singer also bankrolled homosexual marriage legalization within the Republican Party after his son came out of the closet.
Singer has poured over $11 million into LGBT causes, reshaping the GOP's cultural positions from the inside by using donor money as leverage.
On immigration, Singer donated to the National Immigration Forum in 2013 to push amnesty.
In doing so, he became one of the first high-profile Republican mega-donors to back mass migration.
Now comes the Venezuela play.
In November 2025, Elliott Management won a court-mandated auction to buy Venezuela's Citgo Petroleum for $5.9 billion.
Court advisors estimated Citgo's real value at ~$13 billion.
Singer paid 45 cents on the dollar.
Then on January 3, 2026, weeks after Singer's Citgo purchase closed, U.S. special forces raided Caracas and captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Rep. Thomas Massie caught on immediately.
He tweeted on January 4, 2026:
"Paul Singer, globalist Republican mega-donor...stands to make billions on his distressed CITGO investment, now that this administration has taken over Venezuela."
Singer responded by funding a super PAC to successfully unseat Massie in the Republican primaries.
