Help on this math problem? (finding widths from given areas)? Here's the problem I need help answering:
A garden plot must have a central planting area of length 13m and width 8m. There is to be a sidewalk around its edge of width w. If the total area, planting area plus sidewalk area, is 171 m^2, what is the sidewalk width w in meters?
I'm just not sure how to set the problem up, and every time I've tried, I get a very wrong answer. Please help!
