The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has raised the fee for the issuance and replacement of ATM debit and credit cards by 50 per cent, increasing it from โ‚ฆ1,000 to โ‚ฆ1,500.

This adjustment applies specifically to regular or basic debit and credit cards. According to the apex bank, charges for premium, hybrid, or higher-tier cards remain negotiable between the bank and the customer, while virtual cards continue to attract no issuance or replacement fee.

The new โ‚ฆ1,500 charge is part of broader efforts by the CBN to review and update various banking service fees, amid rising operational costs in the financial sector. Customers are advised to confirm the exact application with their respective banks, as implementation may vary slightly depending on the card type and issuer.

This latest increase comes shortly after other ATM-related reviews, including adjustments to withdrawal charges in previous circulars.

Justice Bahati Mwamuye ruled that the authority acted within its legal mandate in issuing the enforcement notice, clearing the way for a nationwide crackdown on affected vehicles.
