Mombasa Doctors Suspend Strike After Deal With Governor Nassir

Doctors in Mombasa have called off their planned strike after striking a last-minute deal with Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, easing fears of a health services shutdown.

Officials from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) and the county government reached the agreement Tuesday night after hours of talks.

KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah said 105 doctors will be promoted by April 1, 2026, with 20 more set for promotion by July 1. The county also pledged to review contractual doctors for confirmation to permanent and pensionable terms by June.

Both sides reconciled delayed remittances, agreeing to clear two pending months. They further resolved concerns over political interference and confirmed the lifting of the interdiction of Coast General CEO Iqbal Khandwalla.

Fishermen in Mbita, Homa Bay County, recovered 20 live bombs from Lake Victoria in two separate incidents that happened on March 1 and March 2, 2026.
The first discovery occurred at Litare Beach on March 1, when fishermen pulled out a metal box from the lake thinking it was a big fish catch, only to realise it contained live bombs and ammunition. They abandoned the box at the lakeshore and alerted security officers.

The Kenya Red Cross is mourning the death of aqua rescue volunteer Samuel Wanyonyi Wangila, who died in the line of duty during a rescue mission in Nairobi.
Wangila was electrocuted after coming into contact with a live electric cable submerged in the Mbagathi River while searching for the body of a boy who had drowned near the Highrise area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday in Mukuru Kayaba, where a team of Red Cross rescuers had been deployed for the retrieval operation. Efforts to resuscitate him failed and he was pronounced dead on arrival at Mater Hospital.
