Mombasa Doctors Suspend Strike After Deal With Governor Nassir

Doctors in Mombasa have called off their planned strike after striking a last-minute deal with Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, easing fears of a health services shutdown.

Officials from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) and the county government reached the agreement Tuesday night after hours of talks.

KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah said 105 doctors will be promoted by April 1, 2026, with 20 more set for promotion by July 1. The county also pledged to review contractual doctors for confirmation to permanent and pensionable terms by June.

Both sides reconciled delayed remittances, agreeing to clear two pending months. They further resolved concerns over political interference and confirmed the lifting of the interdiction of Coast General CEO Iqbal Khandwalla.
