Venetian canals are flooded with Mnemiopsis leidyi jellyfish, also known as "warty comb jellies" or "sea walnuts". They are on the list of the 100 most dangerous invasive species in the world.
The jellyfish clog fishermen's nets in the Venetian lagoon, devour fish larvae and plankton, threatening the ecosystem.
The "sea walnut" is known not only for devouring its own young, but also for its disappearing anus — it only appears when the jellyfish defecates and then disappears again.
