All too long I have been carrying a weight
balanced on my head: a large iron pot
supposed to hold something. Only now
when I have been forced to put it down,
do I find it empty except for a gritty stain
on the bottom. You have told me
this exercise was good for my posture.
Why then did my back always ache?

I wanna draw life to you as your childhood bedtime stories would. I wanna tell you that life is easy. That your first love will love you back. I wanna show you happy endings and tell you you are one in a million. That life will go easy on you. I wanna tell you that life gets easier. And that your mother won't break your heart. I wanna tell you that only lips will touch your skin and that you won't carry the scars of your past your whole life. I wanna say all this to you while looking at your eyes. But I can't. I know in my heart that you deserve more than that.

I wanna tell you people won’t pass you over like you are nothing. I wanna tell you that the world is rainbows and gumdrops. I wanna tell you nothing bad will ever happen to you.
