🇫🇷 France rules out lifting Iran sanctions while Hormuz blocked

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot ruled out on Thursday lifting any international sanctions on Iran as long as the Strait of Hormuz remained blocked.

Barrot told France’s RTL radio that Iran, “or at least the Iranian regime,” was seeking sanctions relief from the United States in return for steps on its nuclear program.

“But it is out of the question that the slightest sanction could be lifted as long as a strait like Hormuz is blocked,” he said.

🇷🇺 Russian drone hits Latvian oil storage facility.

Luckily the storage tanks were empty.
🇮🇷 Due to a US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran is facing a severe oil storage crisis and may be forced to shut down oil wells permanently before June 2026.

Recent reports indicate that storage is expected to fill in 40–45 days, prompting fears of "irreversible" damage to, and the abandonment of, older wells.

The meeting was marked by a “humble and deeply cordial” atmosphere, Pezeshkian is reported as saying.

🇷🇺 Russia’s 81st Victory Day Parade Goes Hardware-Free Amid Ukraine War

Moscow’s iconic May 9 Victory Day parade will take place without tanks, missiles or armored vehicles for the first time in nearly two decades.

Citing the “current operational situation,” the Defense Ministry has scrapped the traditional heavy equipment column, a hallmark of Kremlin military displays.

Foot soldiers and an aerial flyover will remain. The scaled-back event on the 81st anniversary of Soviet victory over Nazi Germany underscores the strain of the Ukraine conflict, with much equipment committed to the front and heightened fears of Ukrainian strikes on the capital.

A symbolic shift for Russia's signature spectacle.

🇨🇳 In a stunning move amid a continued purge of its military, China on Thursday gave two former defense ministers suspended death sentences for corruption.

Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu were both convicted of bribery and given the death penalty with a two-year reprieve by the country’s military court, according to state media. The court announced that the two former generals’ sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole after two years.

Wei, 72, served as defense minister from 2018 to 2023. Li, 68, succeeded Wei and held the position for less than eight months in 2023. Both men were placed under investigation by the military’s anti-graft arm in 2023.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has taken his purge of the armed forces to the very top, most recently targeting his highest-ranked general with the removal in January of Zhang Youxia, who outranked Wei and Li and once oversaw the military’s day-to-day operations.

Xi’s shake-up has cut across a wide swath of China’s 2 million-strong People’s Liberation Army (PLA) –– with more than 100 officers potentially ousted since 2022.
