Daytime butterflies Curetis acuta may seem unremarkable, but their caterpillars are fascinating!

The spikes that shoot out from their horns are not venomous, but they can certainly deter a predator. There's even a theory that they release a substance with an unpleasant odor... Perhaps we just haven't smelled it yet.

These butterflies belong to the family of blues, with a forewing length of just 21-23 mm. They can be found in exotic countries like the Korean Peninsula, Japan (excluding Hokkaido), China, Taiwan, Indochina, Myanmar, and the Himalayas.

Fun Fact: The Curetis acuta butterfly is known for its unique mating behavior. Males perform a special dance to attract females, making them one of the most interesting species in their family. πŸ¦‹πŸ’ƒ

Four-winged Cuckoo (Tapera naevia) in South America

The Four-winged Cuckoo, native to South America, ranges from Mexico and Trinidad down to Bolivia and Argentina.

This bird holds a significant place in Brazilian folklore, linked to the legend of Saci, a one-legged, mischievous mulatto boy who smokes a pipe.

One of Saci's magical traits is his ability to transform into the elusive bird, Matita-pere, whose melancholic song seems to come from nowhere.

Fun Fact: The Four-winged Cuckoo is known for its unique call, which resembles a horse's whinny, adding to its mystical allure in local legends.

European Bison (Bison bonasus) - the last representative of wild cattle in Europe. All modern European bison descend from just 12 individuals that existed in the early 20th century in zoos and reserves. This raises the question: why are zoos important?

Interesting Fact: The European bison and the American bison have been a topic of debate in literature. Are they separate species or subspecies of the same species?

Genetic Insight: While the Y-chromosome (paternal lineage) shows great similarity between the two, the mitochondrial DNA (maternal lineage) tells a different story. The American bison is more closely related to the yak (Bos grunniens), while the European bison is closer to the aurochs (Bos primigenius).

Size Comparison: Modern European bison are smaller than their ancestors and even one of the American bison subspecies, the wood bison. Adult male European bison (Bialowieza Forest subspecies) weigh between 400 to 900 kg.

Texas Horned Lizard: The "Horned Toad"

The Texas Horned Lizard, Phrynosoma cornutum, is often called the "Horned Toad" or "Horned Frog" due to its round body and blunt snout. Its horns are actually extensions of its skull, containing real bone.

Its color varies with its surroundings, blending with the earth's hues: from yellow or reddish-brown in deserts to brown in prairies.

Despite its fierce appearance, the Texas Horned Lizard is incredibly docile. They love to bask in the sun to produce vitamin D, so you'll often find them along roads or other open, rocky areas. At night, they burrow into the sand.

While their color usually camouflages them from predators, when threatened, they puff up to appear much thicker, making it harder for predators to swallow them.

Fun Fact: These lizards have a unique defense mechanismβ€”they can squirt blood from their eyes to deter predators! πŸ¦ŽπŸ’¦

Wren (Eurasian Wren, Troglodytes troglodytes)

Meet the adorable wren, a tiny bird that looks like a soft, fluffy ball with a short tail sticking up! This tiny bird is incredibly active and has an unusually loud voice. Males mark their large territories by perching on high spots and singing their unique, hurried songs filled with loud, fast trills.

The scientific name, Troglodytes troglodytes, comes from the ancient Greek word τρωγλοδύτης, meaning "cave dweller." Today, we use this term to describe troglodytesβ€”prehistoric people who lived in caves. The wren earned this name because it nests in thick-walled, spherical structures that resemble caves from the outside.

The wren is one of the smallest birds in Europe, with a body length of just 9-11 cm, a wingspan of 15-17 cm, and a weight of 8-12 g.

Wrens are found across Eurasia, North Africa, and North America.

A fascinating video about a hungry raccoon and a clever box turtle!

The box turtle, Terrapene, is a land-dwelling turtle found in the USA and Mexico, inhabiting various environments like semi-deserts, forests, thickets, and meadows. They typically settle near large bodies of water.

The most interesting feature of this turtle is the structure of its plastron, which gives it its name: it has a movable hinge. Using this hinge, the turtle protects itself from natural predators by covering its head and front legs with the front part of the plastron, while pulling the rest towards the carapace, thus shielding its tail and back legs.

The result? A box with no openings, making it nearly invulnerable! This unique defense mechanism is truly one of a kind.

Fun Fact: Box turtles can live up to 100 years in the wild, making them one of the longest-living turtle species! πŸ’πŸ’š

Robin (European Robin, Erithacus rubecula) - One of the few birds where both sexes sing (though males have a wider range of notes).

This small bird belongs to the order of passerines. In many countries around the world, it is a symbol of sunrise.

Ancient Celtic and Germanic tribes considered robins to be messengers of the sun itself. Later, they were seen as symbols and messengers of the red-bearded Scandinavian god of thunder and storms, Thor. People believed that if these birds nested near human dwellings, they would protect them from natural disasters like lightning, fire, floods, and other calamities. Destroying a nest was considered an unacceptable act of barbarism, and sometimes the culprit was severely punished.

Fun fact: The robin's bright red breast is a result of a diet rich in fruit and insects, which contain pigments called carotenoids. The more vibrant the red, the healthier the bird! πŸ¦πŸ’–

This small bird is about 14 cm long and exhibits strong sexual dimorphism. During the breeding season, the male has a bright blue forehead and ear-coverts, a purple throat, dark blue wings, breast, and tail, with a black beak, eye-stripe, and breast band. This blue breeding plumage is often referred to as the "nuptial plumage."

Outside of the breeding season, the male has brown plumage with blue wings and a bluish tail. Females resemble males outside of the breeding season but have a chestnut beak and an eye-stripe.

Fun Fact: The Splendid Fairy-wren is known for its complex social structure, often living in groups consisting of a dominant breeding pair and several helpers, usually their offspring from previous years.

Javan (Silvery) Gibbon (Hylobates moloch) - an endemic species of the Indonesian island of Java.

The population of this species has significantly declined in the 20th century due to massive deforestation. Although hunting has been officially banned since 1924, poaching continues to this day.

These animals are captured for private collections and to make traditional Asian medicines.

Their current habitat covers only 4% of the original range.

The Silvery Gibbon is very picky about its food. It consumes only ripe fruits, fresh young leaves, buds, and flowers. Occasionally, its vegetarian diet is supplemented with insects and their larvae.

Silvery Gibbons lead a diurnal arboreal lifestyle. They spend almost all their time in the upper canopy of the forest, descending to the ground only in exceptional cases.

Fun Fact: Gibbons are known for their incredible singing abilities. They produce a variety of sounds, including loud calls that can be heard up to 3 kilometers away! πŸŽΆπŸ’

Oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus) translates to "little jaguar," as it indeed resembles a miniature jaguar in build and coloration.

This small wild cat is even smaller than a typical house cat, with large males weighing around 2.8-3 kg and reaching up to 65 cm in body length.

Oncillas are found from Costa Rica and northern Panama to southeastern Brazil and northern Argentina. There are no reports of their presence in the Amazon Basin, likely because their habitat is limited to mountainous and subtropical forests. Their range is highly fragmented, and they are rare in most areas.

Oncillas have notably larger eyes and ears compared to other leopard species. Their eyes are accentuated by white and black stripes, and they have a large, pink nose. Interestingly, their mouth is quite small, even in proportion to their close relatives. 🐾

Leaf Insects (Phylliidae) are insects that mimic leaves in color and body shape. They are found in the tropics of Southeast Asia.

Their primary color is bright green, but some species also have yellow and orange coloration. Many species have black or brown spots along the edges of their bodies, enhancing their resemblance to a leaf.

They can grow up to 12.5 cm in length. The females have a wide, flat body, while the males are typically slender, with longer wings covering their entire body. Due to their light weight, males of many species can fly, but only for very short distances.

In nature, they spend most of their time on the leaves of trees and shrubs, which they mimic in shape and color, and also feed on. πŸŒΏπŸƒ

Fun Fact: Leaf insects are so good at mimicking leaves that even some scientists have trouble distinguishing them from real leaves! πŸŒΏπŸ›
