Okay I'll bite the bullet and give a prompt explanation. Before we had an emphasis of story crafting wherein characters develop in response.
Now it's all about making the characters first and they are merely placed in situations that are suited for them which make for really bad stories.

It is why there is little to no immersion in storytelling. It's all author self-inserts with shower thought monologues and dialogues. Good storytelling has asymmetries and it touches upon the "theatre of the absurd" as David Lynch would describe.

Let this simmer a bit: imagine celebrity worship for story characters. Imagine working backwards from that to come back with the story. It's fucked up fan-service self-service and there is nothing to be a fan of in the end as the consumer. Only done by an author who is a fan of himself/herself.
