Average down vs Average up
"Average down" refers to buying more of a stock at a lower price to reduce the average cost per share. Imagine you buy 10 shares of a stock at 50 each, and the price drops to 40. If you buy 10 more shares at 40, your average cost per share becomes lower (45 in this case), and you've "averaged down."
On the other hand, "average up" involves buying more of a stock at a higher price to increase the average cost per share. If the stock rises to 60 and you decide to buy more at that higher price, your average cost per share increases. This is an "average up" strategy, and investors might do this when they believe the stock will continue to rise.
