Black Magic M-66

A very nice little OVA. Adapted from a 6-chapter manga of the same name penned by Masamune Shirow (Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell).
This anime knows exactly what it wants to be. An 80s action film. It takes every page from Hollywood's movies and transfers it into anime almost flawlessly. The action, the pacing, the plot (or the lack of it), characters and their motivation. Maybe, back in 1987, this could've been seen as a lack of creativity, but almost 40 years later, in humongous 2026 this brings nothing but nostalgic vibes and "it's supposed to be this corny."
On the technical side, it is definitely on the better side of 80s titles animation-wise. Pretty detailed, colorful and not too egregious when it comes to frame skipping. And my personal favorite - retrofuturistic cityscapes.
Overall, this is a pretty interesting piece of anime history. A first stepping stone to a foundation upon which the Ghost in the Shell rests, along with the entirety of the cyberpunk genre as we know it today.
