One of the reasons that contributed to the development of AI to the current capabilities is the innovation of new model architectures, in addition to compute ability and proliferation of data. The main shift in model architectures occurred because of a concept called Transformer model architectures. Previously, models like Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) were commonly used for processing sequential data, such as text, by predicting the next word based on the previous words one step at a time.
However, RNNs suffered from limitations like difficulty in capturing long-range dependencies and slow training due to sequential processing. The Transformer architecture replaced recurrence with a mechanism called self-attention. This allowed the model to process entire sequences in parallel and dynamically focus on the most relevant parts of the input, enabling much better understanding of context and scaling to larger datasets and models.
