North Korean hackers have laundered $3 billion in crypto stolen from exchanges, services, and investors over the past seven years.

Techniques used by the fraudsters:

1️⃣ Fragmentation — instant transfers of stolen funds to hundreds or thousands of “dust” wallets. The goal is to create an avalanche of transactions and confuse automated and manual investigators.

2️⃣ Mixers — mass routing through mixing services to break obvious on-chain links; even under sanctions these tools remain effective at hiding the source.

3️⃣ DEX → stablecoins — quick swaps on DEXes and conversion into USDT/USDC to “change the asset’s form” and complicate cross-chain tracing.

4️⃣ Gambling and anonymous services — a final pass through online casinos and similar platforms where large sums are easier to “play through” and withdraw via controlled intermediaries.

5️⃣ Social engineering and cover stories — alongside laundering techniques, a carefully crafted operational legend is used: fake résumés, deepfakes in interviews, working through VPNs and Russian IPs, recruiting “workers” in shifts; this provides access to companies and stable cash-out channels.
