TON DNS is a service that allows users to assign a human-readable name to crypto wallets, smart contracts, and websites. With TON DNS, access to decentralized services is analogous to access to websites on the internet.

For regular websites, you rent the domain name from a commercial entity β€” i.e., a centralized domain name registry.

The biggest problem is that your domain name can be blocked or taken away from you for arbitrary, unknown reasons or erroneously.

Anyone can write to a domain name registry, saying that your website is engaging in illegal activity. It would be a false claim, but the registry’s employee would have to block your site, even without having all the details to paint the full picture of the situation. This would inevitably lead to a lot of headaches and large losses.

TON DNS - a fully decentralized domain name system. There is no β€œadministrator” who can block your domain name.

For exceptional cases, it is possible to change the owner or delete the domain by means of network-wide voting. Note that most of the network can change not only DNS, but also any configuration of the blockchain, but since there are several hundred independent validators on the network, then such changes need an exceptionally good reason.

Incumbent domain registries require owners to make non-trivial payments, which go to pay for employees and other expenses, whereas with TON DNS, all you have to do is make an annual micropayment as a symbolic β€œsign of life” to confirm domain ownership.

TON DNS Domains are distributed through an open decentralized auction with equal conditions for all participants.

The first TON DNS auctions began on July 30th, 2022 at dns.ton.org

Basic rules of the auction:
β€” Bids are accepted in Toncoin cryptocurrency only.
β€” Any user can make a bid to buy any domain.
β€” Each new bid must exceed the previous one by at least 5%.
β€” If the last bid is made less than 60 minutes before the end of the auction, the auction will be extended for one hour to allow other bidders to bid back.
β€” The user who made the last bid receives the domain.

Full auction rules are available at this link:
https://telegra.ph/TON-DNS-auction-rules-07-21

Once a year domain ownership must be confirmed.

To do this, the owner should send any small amount (e.g. 0.0001 Toncoin) to the domain's smart contract to extend ownership for another year.

If this is not done, the domain will go into auction mode.

The initial distribution of TON DNS domains is decentralized and on a level playing field through an open auction. The auction is implemented on smart contracts, and coins from the sale of domains are out of circulation.

The auction for a domain name starts when a user places the first bid on it.
The first auctions started on July 30, 2022 at dns.ton.org.

Buying a TON DNS domain is very simple.
First, identify the domain you want to buy, remember that a domain can contain English letters and numbers from 4 to 126 characters, but cannot contain special characters or emoji.

When you have found a suitable free domain, follow the simple buying instructions:

The concepts of starting price and absolute minimum, which depend on the number of characters in the domain name, were introduced.

The starting price is the price from which bidding begins.

Absolute minimum is the price below which a domain name cannot cost.

Number of characters in the name: starting price / absolute minimum.
4 characters: 1 000 / 100 Toncoin
5 characters: 500 / 50 Toncoin
6 characters: 400 / 40 Toncoin
7 symbols: 300 / 30 Toncoin
8 symbols: 200 / 20 Toncoin
9 symbols: 100 / 10 Toncoin
10 symbols: 50 / 5 Toncoin
More than 11 symbols: 10 / 1 Toncoin

In the course of trading, the final price can be orders of magnitude higher.

Every 30 days the current minimum will decrease by 10% from the previous one until the absolute minimum is reached.

All the dynamics of the starting price change see in the attached table.

How to pick up a domain from the auction and link your wallet to it

If the auction is over and your bid has won, you will see your wallet address in the "Owner" field on the domain page on the TON DNS website (https://dns.ton.org/), and the NFT of the domain will be shown in the "Collections" tab in Tonkeeper.

To pick up a domain from the auction and become its full owner, you need to perform any action with it.

The easiest way to do this is to put your wallet address in it using Tonkeeper.
In the "Collections" tab, each TON DNS will have a "Link" button ("Link", i.e. put your wallet address into this domain).
By clicking the button and making a transaction, you will be able to use the .ton short name instead of the wallet address in all applications that support this feature.

Such a surprise awaits many people, because on this "printing" wallet now about 4700 domains.

No need to worry! All you need to do is to refresh metadata on the domain page in Getgems by clicking "..." and then "Refresh Metadata".
After that you will get your domain from the wallet EQC3dN...z0Bz and you can put it up for sale.

Storage of domains and confirmation of ownership

Users are charged a storage fee of about 0.005 Toncoin per year for storing any NFT on the TON network. Since TON DNS domains are common NFTs, this rule applies to them as well.

The network fee is negligible, but failure to pay it can lead to unpleasant technical consequences.

In the interest of users, the TON Foundation has decided to leave 1 Toncoin on each domain's smart contract to pay the storage fee. This amount will be enough for about 200 years.

Having received a domain at the TON DNS auction, you may not think about fees in the near future, but after 200 years the balance of the smart contract will need to be replenished.

However, domain owners are required to take an active action each year to renew their ownership.

Unlike centralized domain registrars, TON DNS does not require a renewal fee per se - you just need to show "signs of life" once a year by sending a minimum amount of Toncoin to the domain's smart contract to renew your domain ownership for another year.

This can be done at any time, as the domain is renewed for one year from the date of the transaction.

Renewal is necessary so that domains whose owners have lost access or interest in them for some reason can return to the open auction.

Instructions:

1. It is necessary to go to the site dns.ton.org in a regular browser or with the help of the decentralized browser Tonkeeper in the interface of the wallet.
2. Next, you need to connect the TON wallet where the domains are currently located.
3. Click on the "My Domains" button to see the list of domains and their expiration date
4. If you have less than 2 months left till the end of your domain ownership, we recommend you to renew it immediately. To do this, click on the domain, then - "Renew this domain" and confirm the transaction in your wallet.

Unrenewed domains will go into the open seven-day auction mode, and their minimum bid will be calculated according to the original rules.
πŸ‘6πŸ”₯3
Unlinking the address of the previous owner

After purchasing a domain on the secondary market in a re-auction after a renewal lapse or on a marketplace, you may find that the domain is tied to the owner's previous address.
In this case, you will see a warning in Tonkeeper:
"The domain is not linked to your current address. Be careful with transactions to this domain."

All you need to do is click on the "Linked with XXXX...XXXX" button and confirm unlink by paying a ~0.006 TON fee.
After that you will be able to link the domain to your own address using the "Link domain" button.
