Tend to your herd

From the greatest of honor of memorizing the Qur'an is being able to recite it in prayer, especially in the depth of the night. May Allāh, The Most Bountiful, grant us this beautiful gift.

Allāh says, "Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for understanding and more suitable for (reciting Allāh's) words." [ Surat Al-Muzzammil 73:6, Tafsir Ibn Kathir]

However, this sweetness of the Qur'an can be shortlived when we come back to that same surah few weeks later and find it littered with mistakes, or entirely forgotten. The pressure of retaining old memorization has pushed many off the path of memorizing the Qur'an. But this was bound to happen, as the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Keep refreshing your knowledge of the Qur'an, for I swear by Him in Whose Hand is the life of Mahammad, it is more liable to escape than camels which are hobbled." [Sahih Muslim 791]

So what can we do to tend to our herd and stop the camels from escaping?

1. Change of mindset

Many see revision of old surah as something secondary. Imagine bringing in new camels into your herd everyday - yet none are being looked after. Inevitably, the herd will slowly die or the camels will escape to where they are better treated.

Regular revision of old surah is how we tend to the new surahs we let into our life. Letting in a new surah can be relatively easy, but tending to it and nurturing it over time is the real "living with the Qur'an". In this regard, we need to change our mindset and treat revision as primary - revision IS the hifdh (preservation).

2. Take action

📝 We need to have a written schedule that we can easily stick to based on our capability and circumstances. Something written always makes things more serious! The schedule should cater for at least the following: old surahs, recently memorized surah, and the new ayaat we are currently memorizing.

🗓 Having specific appointments for reviewing can help stay on track, e.g. one day in the week, recite new memorization to a teacher, and on another day, recite old surahs with an online partner, etc.

📵 It's also really helpful to put conditions in place that force us to achieve our daily goals, e.g. "I will not check my WhatsApp until I do one page of revision" , or "I'm not allowed to memorize a new ayah until I've reviewed such and such surah."

Yes, I know, this might sound like a bit too much, but, Allāh says:

"And those who strive in our cause – We will surely guide them to Our ways (in this world and hereafter). And indeed, Allāh is with the doers of good." [Al-'Ankabut 29:69]

Ibn Abi Hatim narrated that Abbas Al-Hamdani Abu Ahmad -- one of the people of Akka (Palestine) -- said, concerning the ayah:
"Those who act upon what they know, Allāh will guide them to that which they do not know." [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]

In this context, if we strive hard in taking care of the ayaat we have already memorized (by understanding its Tafsir, acting accordingly and reviewing it regularly) then, by the grace of Allāh, our doors for the new ayaat will be opened.

And last, but not least...

3. Take precaution!

The great Imam Shafi’ee was known for his amazing hifdh. But, eventually he too started to find some deficiency in his memorization and saught advise from his Shaykh, the famous Waki’ bin Al-Jarrah.

He captures the incident in his lines of prose:

شَكَوْتُ إِلَى وَكِيعٍ سُوءَ حِفْظِي;
وَقَالَ بِأَنَّ الْعِلْمَ نُورٌ ;

“I complained to Waki' of a deficiency in my ability to memorizie,
so he advised me to leave off sins,
and said, "Verily, knowledge is light,
and the light of Allāh is not given to a sinner."

[Al-Jawāb al-Kāfī’ P. 54]

This is, as Allāh says, "so have Taqwa of Allāh (i.e. work in obedience towards Allāh and refrain from sinning), and Allāh will teach you... " [Al-Baqarah, 2:282]

We ask Allāh to grant us tawfiq and purify our intentions, and to make our Qur'an an evidence for us, not against us, on the Day of Judgement.

‘do not expect from yourself to approach salah with a reassured and humbled heart while you speak your day listening to music and accompanying bad people.

don’t deny the difficulty and weight of the Witr prayer for you, nor the concern for the adkar while you are preoccupied night and day which that which displeases Allah.

your willingness in doing acts of worship is closely related to what occupies you and occupies your heart throughout the day.’

the messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “No Muslim servant supplicates for his brother behind his back but that the angel says: And for you the same.”

so remember in this blessed day and in this blessed hour to make dua for your loved ones and for the muslim ummah. those who preceded us in death and those alive today.

do not forget us from your prayers 🕊️

say, "To whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth?" Say, "To Allāh." He has decreed upon Himself mercy. He will surely assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Those who will lose themselves [that Day] do not believe.

narrated by Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: I heard Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله ﷺ saying, "Allâh has divided Mercy into one hundred parts, and He kept ninety-nine parts with Him and sent down one part to the earth, and because of that one single part, His creatures are merciful to each other, so that even the mare lifts up its hoof away from its baby animal, lest it should trample on it."

From the perfection of love is that you fear Allah with regard to whom you love, and that you do not become a reason to drag him into disobedience, thereby oppressing and harming him.
i will continue sharing benefits from some of the books I read and for this following week, I will continue with this book Bi’thnillAh 💌 a book I have read before and absolutely loved. it speaks about the actions of the heart, and is derived from the book ‘madarij as-salikiin’ by ibn Qayyim رحمه الله

I hope it will be of benefit to us all, and aid us in purifying the vessels in our bodies — our hearts, and guide us to the best of manners, actions, and abodes in this life and the next.

'…and guidance has another level. And it is the last of its ranks, and it is the guidance on the Day of Resurrection to the path of Paradise. Whoever is guided in this abode to the straight path of Allah, with which He sent His Messenger, and sent down His books, he will be guided there to the straight path that leads to His Paradise and the abode of His reward.

… and according to the degree of him treading/embarking on the path that Allah Has set for His servants in this abode, his walking on that path ( the sirat) will equal to that.

Some of them pass like lightning, and some of them pass in a moment, and some of them pass like the wind … and some of them run, and some pass by walking, and some by crawling, and some (cross but) get wounded deeply, and some of them are crammed and plunged into the fire.

So let the servant of Allah at the path he walks on now, and take this path described as an example, as you are rewarded only in accordance to what you used to do.'

may Allah guide us to paradise without punishment and pain

And be patient, [O Muḥammad], and your patience is not but through Allāh. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire.

another factor that spoils the heart: excessive eating.

excessively eating that which is permissible to eat and not knowing the limits of satiety makes the heart and soul burdened when it comes to obedience, and instead, it preoccupies the soul with filling the stomach ….

and (from the results of overeating) is that the paths from which shaytan enters are widened… and whoever eats a lot and drinks a lot, sleeps a lot and thus, he loses a lot, and mentioned in the famous hadith "the human does not fill any container that is worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat what will support his back. If this is not possible, then a third for food, a third for drink, and third for his breath."

— (but) fasting narrows the paths of shaytan and blocks its paths.

Just ask for forgiveness.

A man complained to Hasan al-Basri about a drought.

So he said to him: Pray to Allaah for forgiveness.

Another man complained to him of poverty.

So he said to him: Pray to Allaah to forgive you.

Another man said to him: Pray to Allaah to bless me with a child.

He said: Pray to Allaah for forgiveness.

Another complained to him that his garden was dry.

He said to him: Pray to Allaah for forgiveness.

We asked him about that and he said: This is not my personal opinion.

For Allaah says:
Ask forgiveness from your Lord, Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver;

He’ll send rain to you in abundance.

And give you increase in wealth and children,
and bestow on you gardens
and bestow on you rivers.

Surah Nuh (v. 10-12)
