What if the most powerful revolutions are the ones that seem impossible?

During the first intifada in Palestine (1987-1993), a largely nonviolent uprising led by Palestinians—many of them youth—challenged one of the most powerful militaries in the world.

What made the intifada revolutionary wasn’t just the protests or boycotts; it was the belief that a people with little power, facing insurmountable odds, could stand up to a global power and demand dignity.

This echoes the story of the Morant bay rebellion in Jamaica in 1865, where black Jamaicans, led by Paul Bogle, rose up against British colonial rule.

Although the rebellion was brutally suppressed, it led to reforms that eventually brought more rights to the Jamaican people.

Both the intifada and Morant bay teach us that even in the face of impossible odds, resistance is never in vain.

Earlier today, an IDF bulldozer deliberately demolished an observation tower and perimeter fence of a UN position in Marwahin.

Yet again, we remind the IDF and all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times.

Yet again, we note that breaching a UN position and damaging UN assets is a flagrant violation of international law and Security Council resolution 1701. It also endangers the safety and security of our peacekeepers in violation of international humanitarian law.

The IDF has repeatedly demanded that UNIFIL vacate its positions along the Blue Line and has deliberately damaged UN positions. Despite the pressure being exerted on the mission and our troop-contributing countries, peacekeepers remain in all positions. We will continue to undertake our mandated tasks to monitor and report.
