Like many others in Gaza, Eid al-Attar, a teacher from the northern part of the Strip, now spends his days struggling to secure enough food and water to keep his family alive.

Forced to be forcibly displaced eight times since the Israeli war on Gaza erupted in October, the 42-year-old has done his best to protect his five children. Now, the Palestinian territory faces a new threat: the highly contagious and potentially deadly polio virus which had again spread due to the Israeli total blockade and systemically destroyed its healthcare system.

“We live in a tent, which does not protect us from anything, there are no medicines, there is garbage everywhere, and the streets are filled with wastewater,” al-Attar said.

The widespread spread of infectious diseases among Palestinian prisoners inside the occupation prisons, and the accompanying decision by the occupation prison administration in Rimon and Nafha prisons to prevent lawyers from visiting prisoners, is new evidence of the extent of the catastrophic conditions in which prisoners live, with the continuation of the series of abuse against them, and their deprivation of the most basic human rights guaranteed by all laws and statutes.

What prisoners are exposed to, from torture, prevention of visits, deprivation of food, drink and sleep, deliberate medical neglect, isolation and repression; which led to the martyrdom of a number of them, indicates that the occupation government is adopting a policy of deliberate killing against them, a policy that cannot be tolerated, and the occupation must bear the consequences for the crimes it commits.

We demand that international organizations concerned with human rights stand up to their responsibilities regarding the suffering our prisoners are exposed to inside the occupation prisons, especially what is stipulated in the Geneva Convention regarding prisoners of war.

We call on the masses of our Palestinian people to escalate the movement supporting and backing the prisoners, as we have no choice but to confront until the occupation is forced and deterred from continuing to commit its crimes and violations against our heroic prisoners.
