According to new details from the IDF's investigation of yesterday's blast in central Gaza, killing 21 soldiers, the Hamas operatives fired an RPG missile at a building while hiding in a nearby plantation.

Two buildings, some 600 meters from the Israeli border, had been rigged up with around 20 mines for detonation. The RPG fire from a few dozen meters away likely set off the mines, causing the structures to collapse and killing 19 soldiers inside and near them.

An IDF tank guarding the operation spotted the Hamas operatives and was about to return fire, but before managing to do so, the gunmen fired another RPG, hitting the tank and killing two troops.

The Hamas cell apparently fled following the attack.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convenes in New York City for the quarterly open debate on the situation in the Middle East, including the situation in Gaza.

The focus of the discussions will be on solutions to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which is now in its fourth month. The participants are also expected to discuss the situation in the Middle East in a whole and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, among other issues.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to attend in person.

Palestine is calling for sanctions against Israel and its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki has said.

"There must be limits to what Israel can do in Palestine. Impunity must end, there must be accountability. If it is necessary, why not sanctions? We call for sanctions against Israel and against individuals, starting with Prime Minister Netanyahu," al-Maliki told reporters after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

He said that in order to stop hostilities, Israel must "change its attitude, stop thinking that Palestinian territory can be invaded, that it can be destroyed". In response to a related question from journalists, al-Maliki said he had not discussed with Lavrov possible Russian steps to organise inter-Palestinian talks or direct contacts with Israel.

The Palestinian Authority would also like to see a permanent ceasefire in Gaza without preconditions, Riyad al-Maliki said.
