In 2012, Israel assassinated the deputy commander of the Qassam Brigades, Commander Ahmed al-Jaabari, who managed the Shalit deal negotiations with Commander Marwan Issa at the time.

Israel celebrated the operation because it thought it had gotten rid of one of its most stubborn commanders, as Ahmed was a very stubborn negotiator who did not give in easily. He was the one who said,

“If you do not accept our conditions, we will bury Shalit and bring 10 instead of him.”
