STATEMENT from Google workers with the No Tech for Apartheid campaign on Google's announcement of massive $23B investment in Israeli tech startup as Wired investigation confirms Project Nimbus' active role in the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza

Over the weekend, Google executives announced they are planning to invest a staggering $23 billion in Israeli cloud security startup Wiz, heralding the corporation’s single largest investment in an acquisition.

Google’s growing investment in “Israel” despite the state’s ongoing genocide in Gaza—which has so far led to the murder of over 186,000 Palestinians—is a major slap in the face to the growing masses of Google workers across the globe who have spoken out against and clearly stated their opposition to the company’s business with Israel’s genocidal apartheid state and support for Palestinian liberation.

This announcement comes as a bombshell exposé from WIRED this week confirmed that Project Nimbus, Google & Amazon’s joint $1.2B cloud contract with the Israeli military and govt, is linked to the Israeli Occupation Forces and its current genocide of Palestinians in Gaza:

❗️In February, five months after Israel began its genocidal campaign in Gaza, the head of Israel’s National Cyber Directorate, Gaby Portnoy, credited Project Nimbus technology for aiding the campaign.

❗️"Phenomenal things are happening in battle because of the Nimbus public cloud, things that are impactful for victory,” Portnoy said.

He also said that Google & Amazon have been “working partners” on creating “a framework for national defense,” calling it the “Iron Dome of Cyber.”

❗️Last year, Omri Nezer, the head of the technology infrastructure unit at the Israeli Government Procurement Administration, posted on LinkedIn about a conference aimed at “different government offices within ‘Project Nimbus.’”

He mentions panelists including “an IDF representative” and the head of engineering IT for Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which WIRED describes as “a defense company originally created as a research and development company for the Israeli military.”

❗️In June, eight months after Israel began its genocidal campaign in Gaza, an Israeli govt document was published about Project Nimbus, name-checking "the Ministry of Defense” & “the IDF” as customers who will get access to a “digital marketplace” of services under Project Nimbus.

Despite the company’s continued insistence that Nimbus is “'not directed at” military applications, the evidence continues to speak for itself:

❗️multiple Israeli govt officials, in addition to official reports from the Israeli govt and media, confirm that Project Nimbus not only includes the IOF as a client––but also emphasizes that Google & Amazon’s Nimbus capabilities are specifically used in Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Let’s be clear: Google executives are shameless genocide profiteers and their commitment to being the backbone of the war machine is by design.

They obscure their complicity because they know their actions will alienate workers. This investment is an escalation by executives to double down on their partnership with Israel and the genocide it is committing in Gaza.

Enough is enough. Google is only able to function because of us, its workers. We do not want our labor to be used for genocide and apartheid. They are few and we are many. We are committed to escalating our organizing commensurately.
