The Ministry of Finance issued new bonds in the days immediately following October 7th. The $1 billion raised in the first month is the largest amount of Israeli Bonds ever purchased in a short period, according to the Development Corporation, the agency behind Israel Bond sales.

These bonds are high risk because the purchaser can’t sell them in a secondary market. They have to hold them until maturity.

Israel's mostly reserve army is refusing to join the army again

The percentage of soldiers showing up for the a new round of reserve duty is in sharp decline and the solutions are running out.

An officer said that there's no way to tell them to come after they've already given 140 days of their year. Many commanding officers have already said so.

In some battalions, at most 60% of the soldiers are coming to duty, and this number is likely going to decrease after the new government order to extend the reserve duty. Israel's doctrine was always short wars and its small professional army cannot operate soundly for long against a strong adversary.

One of the commanders said that the IDF lacks thousands of fighters and at least 15 battalions. The army is based on reserves, it has always been this way, but now the long war is causing significant attrition.

I will give you an example through two tank commanders that I have in the battalion. One is 47 years old and the other is 49 years old. Both of them haven't trained for almost ten years, they don't know the crew in their tank nor the fighters with them in the company.

US Senator Chris Van Hollen, a prominent American lawmaker and member of the chamber’s foreign relations committee, has criticised the House and Senate leadership’s decision to invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to give an address to Congress.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Van Hollen said that Netanyahu giving an address to Congress risks signalling that Washington is endorsing his war strategy in Gaza, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians so far.

The address could also send a message to Netanyahu that he can continue to avoid the repeated demands by Democrats for Israel’s military to do more to protect civilian life in Gaza.
