🇿🇦 South Africa is taking action at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to demand a halt to Israel's offensive in Rafah as part of its response to the war in Gaza.

The ICJ will hear South Africa's petition over two days at the Peace Palace in The Hague.

South Africa has accused Israel of committing acts of genocide against Palestinians and has requested the ICJ to issue three urgent orders:

🔴An immediate cessation of Israel's military operations in Rafah.

🔴Unrestricted access to Gaza for UN officials, humanitarian organizations, journalists, and investigators.

🔴A report on actions taken to comply with these orders.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees estimates that nearly 450,000 Palestinians have been forced to leave Rafah due to escalating military operations. Since October 7, Israel has killed at least 35,233 Palestinians and wounded 79,141 in its attacks on Gaza.

The orders of the ICJ are legally binding, but enforcement mechanisms are limited. Several countries have requested to join the case against Israel.
