Senior officials in the Palestinian Authority asked the mediators to exclude prominent Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti from a potential prisoner exchange deal between “Israel” and Hamas.

That request “to exclude Commander Barghouti from the prisoner deal” was submitted by Majid Faraj, Director of Palestinian General Intelligence, and Hussein Al-Sheikh, Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Senior Palestinian Authority leaders believe that Barghouti’s release will threaten the leadership of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

The United States, one of the three mediators involved in the indirect ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, has agreed to remove Barghouti’s name from any potential lists that Hamas is expected to submit.

Hamas said that it would insist on the release of Barghouti and other imprisoned prominent Palestinian figures. It is worth noting that the talks did not reach the stage of exchanging names and lists.
