• Following this the body switches to glyconeogenesis; this is where we start to see the consequences of starvation, poor wound healing, wound infection...

• Then the body switches to ketoneogenesis; patients are visibly malnourished.

• Finally, there's protein breakdown; which leads to organ dysfunction and death.
