Is it Dhu Bab or Dhubab?

The Saudi outlet Al Arabiya, in its reporting on Yemen, used “ذباب” to refer to the area in southwestern Yemen.

This is a wrong spelling of the area, if read literally, this spelling means “flies” in Arabic, and there is no place in Yemen called “ذباب.” (DhuBab)

What does exist in Yemen is a place called “ذو باب” (Dhu Bab).

At the beginning of the Himyarite Kingdom era in Yemen (late 3rd-5th centuries), which started by King Shammar Yahrish of the Himyar tribe, who conquered Saba, Najran and Hadramout and unified the historical Yemen under a single rule

The use of the title “Dhu,” meaning “possessor of” or “owner of,” became widespread as a title denoting honor and political and social prestige.

The title “Dhu” was given to sheikhs of major tribes and regional leaders who possessed extensive influence and represented the noble class.

In the historical Yemeni lexicon, the title was associated with the ownership of land and large estates, which were known as a “mahfad” or “mikhlaf.”

Those who owned these large agricultural territories were given the title “Dhu,” followed by the name of the land or tribe, as a mark of a status, such as Dhu Yazan, Dhu Rayn, and Dhu Ghayman.

To this day, there are places in Yemen that carry the title “Dhu,” like Dhu Bab.

Which could mean “the possessor of Bab Al-Mandab.”

The most famous Yemeni to carry this title was Sayf Dhi Yazan (Dhi = Dhu), who has a famous story with the Persian emperor Khosrow I.
