#ARTICLE | Dr. Al-Rantisi
Abdulaziz Ali AbdulMajid Al-Hafez Al-Rantisi was a figure who combined military, political, and religious aspects. He commanded respect and love from various segments of the Palestinian, Arab, and Islamic communities. Known for his strong, stubborn personality, courage, and defiance against the leaders of Israel and its oppressors in the prisons. In 1990, while detained, he accomplished memorizing the Quran in a single cell alongside the martyr Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. He expressed his deep connection to the homeland and Palestinian people through poetic verses.
He worked at the Islamic University of Gaza since its opening in 1978, teaching subjects like science, genetics, and parasitology. In 1983, he was arrested for refusing to pay taxes to the Israeli authorities. Rantisi, along with activists from the Islamic Movement in Gaza, founded the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, in 1987. He was among the first leaders arrested on January 15, 1988, during the initiation of the first Palestinian uprising. Later, in December 1992, he was deported along with more than 400 individuals to southern Lebanon in the region known as the Marj az-Zohour.
He became the official spokesperson for the deportees, stationed in the Return Camp in Marj az-Zohour, aiming to force Israel to allow their return. Upon his return, he was arrested by the Israeli forces and faced military court sentencing, remaining detained until mid-1997. His total time spent in Israeli prisons was seven years, in addition to the year he spent in exile in Marj az-Zohour in 1992. He holds the distinction of being the first Hamas leader arrested on January 15, 1988, and he spent three weeks in detention before being released, only to be re-arrested on March 5, 1988.
Following the assassination of the esteemed leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin by Israel, allegiance was pledged to him in the homeland. In his first leadership role, he ordered the execution of the Ashdod Port operation, sparking the chain of events leading to his own assassination. On the evening of April 17, 2004, an Israeli helicopter launched a missile at his car, killing his companion first, and later, he succumbed to injuries while in the emergency room. Since then, Hamas refrained from declaring a successor to Rantisi, fearing his potential martyrdom.
Rantisi aspired to the liberation of all Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, emphasizing that his soul would not find peace until all prisoners were freed. His notable traits included strictness in dealing with Israel, humility in his work as a pediatrician, and an open door to all patients.
In 2004, a book titled "The Memoirs of the Martyr Dr. Abdulaziz Rantisi" was published, compiled and edited by Amer Shemakh, a specialist in Islamic studies. Shemakh also authored a book titled "Ahmed Yassin Awakened a Nation" based on his expertise in Islamic studies.
