Following pressure from the United States, Israel reopened the Kerem Shalom crossing on Tuesday to allow aid and goods into the Gaza Strip.
Haaretz learned that the decision was made Monday evening after Aryeh Lightstone, a senior advisor to US Middle East envoy Steve Wittkopf and an advisor to the Peace Council, approached Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and asked him to resume aid deliveries to the Strip.
Lightstone's appeal to Netanyahu came after the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories announced on Saturday the closure of all crossings into the Strip due to the security situation until further notice.
