On this day 102 years ago, March 3 1924, the Ottoman Caliphate was abolished by a decree from the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
As part of Mustafa Kemal’s secular reforms, the Republic of Turkey replaced the Ottoman Sultanate and Sultan Abdulmejid II was removed from his position as the last Ottoman caliph.
The Ottomans held the last caliphate in Islamic history, which they claimed when Sultan Selim I conquered the Mamluks of Egypt in 1517.
