Prior to the UNSC vote on the ceasefire resolution, the US has been clear about their position. Their ambassador to the UN stated that the vote was 'wishful and irresponsible' and proposed moving on to a "temporary ceasefire" draft.
The hidden goal was to avoid standing as the single obstructor of peace. The Algerian delegation did not fall for the trap. Instead, they kept the resolution as is.
They knew that there was no way the US would allow a ceasefire. So the point was to put the US face to face against the international community that they claim to be leading.
