On December 31, the IDF Spokesperson issued a routine report on IDF operations in southern Lebanon, which reported on the discovery and destruction of an arms depot in the Saluki area. Shortly thereafter, reports emerged of the thwarting of an arms smuggling attempt by Hezbollah operatives from an arms depot in southern Lebanon to a car parked near the building.
This news was added to the figures published by the army regarding its operations in the first month of the ceasefire on the southern Lebanon front. According to the report, 44 “terrorists” were killed, 25 attacks were carried out in Lebanon, in addition to 120 violations of the agreement by Hezbollah.

So if we think that Hezbollah is kneeling and submitting and begging for its survival, that is not the picture when we look to the north. Hezbollah is provoking us and trying to restore and increase its power, and it still sees itself as the defender of Lebanon, and if Israel does not abide by the ceasefire as it says it will respond.
Moreover, Lebanese sources say that Hezbollah links the situation in Lebanon to the situation in Syria; the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the occupation of the buffer zone, the violation of Syrian sovereignty, the “perpetuating the occupation of the Golan Heights,” and the violations of the ceasefire agreement all give it legitimacy to stand firm internally and not give up its weapons as if it were a defeated party, while Israel moves without controls. The message is clear; Hezbollah considers the Israeli moves in Lebanon and Syria a pretext to continue to maintain its military power, and is preparing to continue “resisting the Israeli enemy.”
In order to achieve this goal, Hezbollah works through several means:
Propaganda: Propaganda is important to Hezbollah because of its internal public relations, and also vis-à-vis the international community. Therefore, Hezbollah representatives demonstrate their cooperation with the monitoring mechanisms, UNIFIL and the Lebanese army, and stress that it is Israel that is violating the agreements, and that it will return to fighting if the situation continues.

Rehabilitation: Hezbollah is making tremendous efforts to restore its political and military capabilities. The Israeli army’s operations in recent weeks demonstrate the party’s determination to salvage its secret weapons stores and find ways to smuggle weapons from Syria amid the instability there. The party is also working to fill the void in the party’s military and political leadership, seeking to return to organized activity. Despite losses among the party’s activists (about 3,800 dead), it has not lost its ability to fight, and it still has tens of thousands of regular and reserve fighters awaiting orders.

Ultimately, it is important to maintain the relationship with Iran, because without it, there is no Hezbollah. After the fall of Assad, the bridge that linked Tehran to its “terrorist” Shiite arm in Lebanon, both sides are trying to maintain military and economic assistance to the party, whose economic capabilities have not been damaged. Despite the Israeli air force’s attacks on Hezbollah’s banking network in Lebanon last October, money continues to flow, mainly from the “drug trade” from South America, Africa, and the Middle East, and it provides the party with much-needed oxygen.
Assuming that escalation is imminent, and with Iran and Hezbollah trying to test Israel’s red lines, Israel should keep its army in southern Lebanon after the 60-day ceasefire. It is important to apply greater pressure on Hezbollah to deter it and to maintain the new balance of power equation against it. Unlike in 2006, Israel is determined to enforce Resolution 1701 in all its provisions, and not to rely on any other party to do the work for it.
