Dr. Adnan was first reported dead in May 2024, but Israel provided no cause of death. He was arrested in December 2023 after Israeli soldiers laid siege to al-Awda Hospital and forced its staff and patients to evacuate.
Dr. Adnan had previously worked at al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza's largest medical facility, before it was destroyed by Israeli forces - who forcibly evacuated 50,000 displaced people from its grounds.
Witnesses revealed new details about Dr. Adnan's death in a Sky News investigation. He was taken to Israel's notorious Sde Teiman prison facility, where Israeli guards engage in systematic torture and sexual abuse. Other detainees said Dr. Adnan was dumped in the yard of Ofer Prison, badly beaten and naked from the waist down. He died shortly after.
"He had clearly been assaulted with injuries around his body. He was naked in the lower part of his body….. The prison guards threw him in the middle of the yard and left him there. Dr. Adnan al-Bursh was unable to stand up," a witness said.
Dr.Adnan helped dig mass graves for martyred Palestinians as the sound of explosions rang out behind the hospital's walls.
He worked in the hospital around the clock for 24 hours treating patients according to his wife Yasmin.
