What's new in NVDA 2024.3?
The Add-on Store will now notify you if any add-on updates are available on NVDA startup.
There are now options to apply Unicode normalization to speech and braille output. This can be useful when reading characters that are unknown to a particular speech synthesizer or braille table and which have a compatible alternative, like the bold and italic characters commonly used on social media. It also allows reading of equations in the Microsoft Word equation editor.
Help Tech Activator Pro braille displays are now supported.
Unassigned commands have been added to scroll the mouse wheel vertically and horizontally.
There are several bug fixes, particularly for the Windows 11 Emoji Panel and Clipboard history. For web browsers, there are fixes for reporting error messages, figures, captions, table labels and checkbox/radio button menu items.
LibLouis has been updated, adding new Braille tables for Cyrillic Serbian, Yiddish, several ancient languages, Turkish, and the International Phonetic Alphabet. eSpeak has been updated, adding support for the Karakalpak language. Unicode CLDR has also been updated.

Voiceover Users – has a recent YouTube App update left you unable to comment? Here’s a fix!
In recent weeks we became aware that a recent You tube App update has left you unable to comment on videos. It appears that the App was updated in late July and while you could still play videos, if you decided to comment on one, your voiceover could not find the send comment button.
Since around iOS16 voiceover got a clever addition called ‘screen recognition’ and if you’ve never looked into what this feature can do, then it’s time to give it a twirl and see if it ‘fixes’ your cumbersome app.
Note: When turning on Screen Recognition, there is a small download from the internet of around 30mb to complete the setup, so make sure your mobile data or Wi-Fi is on before commencing the instructions below.
1. To access the ‘Screen Recognition feature, simply head over to the settings menu. From there go into the accessibility settings, now open Voiceover settings,
2. navigate down to ‘Voiceover Recognition.’
3. In here open ‘Screen Recognition’ and make sure the switch in set to ‘on.’
4. Next item down on this page you need to open the ‘Apply to Apps’ page.
5. Find YouTube (or indeed any other app behaving badly) and double tap to select it.
Now exit the settings menu and try YouTube again. It should be possible now to post your comment on a video. This ‘Screen Recognition’ feature can be applied to any App on your phone, so if you have another App or two that Voiceover isn’t working as well as it should – simply repeat the above steps to see if it solves the issue.
Note, for easy access Screen recognition will also appear on your Rotor where you can turn it on or off as you need it. It is best to have it off for apps that work well with Voiceover.

What's New in NVDA 2024.4.
This release includes a number of improvements in Microsoft Office, braille, and document formatting.
In Word or Excel, it is now possible to double-press the comment gesture to read the comment or note in a browsable dialog. You can now use the review cursor selection command to select text in PowerPoint. NVDA also no longer brailles garbage characters when showing row or column header text in tables in Word when using the object model.
NVDA can now be configured to report font attributes in speech and braille separately.
A new setting has been added to configure the timeout to perform a multiple press gesture, such as the report time/date command.
You can now configure how NVDA shows text formatting in braille, and set NVDA to show the start of paragraphs in braille. NVDA can now speak the character at the cursor when performing a braille cursor routing action. Cursor routing reliability has been improved, and support for routing keys in PowerPoint has been added. All lines of cells will now be used when using a multi-line braille display via HID braille. NVDA is no longer unstable after restarting NVDA during an automatic Braille Bluetooth scan.
The minimum required version of Poedit that works with NVDA is now version 3.5.
eSpeak NG has been updated, adding support for the Faroese and Xextan languages.

How to Use Windows Voice Input?
1.
Open a text box window, such as Notepad or Word, and then press Windows + H.
2.
After you hear a sound, start speaking.
3.
If you are using a screen reader such as NVDA, your TTS will speak the words you say. When you stop speaking, wait for 1 or 2 seconds. Your TTS will then speak the entire text. Also, your spoken text will be inserted into the text box.
4.
To stop the input, press any key. A new sound will play, which means the voice input has stopped.
Note: Some languages are not supported by Voice Input, such as Urdu.
Note 2: When you start Voice Input, it will check the keyboard first. Example: If you have selected an English keyboard, then it will type in English.

what's new in talkback 16.0
Gemini AI Image Description Enhancements
TalkBack 16.0 introduces two new features for detailed image descriptions: describing the entire screen and asking follow-up questions.
Describing the Entire Screen
Previously, detailed image descriptions only worked for the currently focused item. With TalkBack 16.0, a new option allows capturing a screenshot of the entire screen and sending it to Gemini for description. To use this, open the TalkBack menu and select “Describe screen.” You can also assign a gesture for this feature in the Customize gestures section of TalkBack settings.
Asking Follow-Up Questions
TalkBack now supports follow-up questions after receiving an image description, whether it’s for the focused item or the whole screen. In the description results window, double-tap “Ask Gemini” to speak your question, or “Type question” to enter it manually.
• When using voice, the question is sent automatically after you stop talking.
• When typing, press the Done key on Gboard or use the appropriate braille gesture to send the question.
Answers are spoken aloud when received, and you can review the conversation through touch exploration or swiping. Next to each description or answer, there are thumbs up and thumbs down buttons to give feedback. To close the window, press the Close button or use the Back gesture.
Table Navigation
Google introduced table navigation by columns and rows in TalkBack 16.0. When a table is in focus, select the rows and columns reading control to start table navigation. Then swipe right or left to navigate between columns, or swipe down or up to navigate between rows.
To exit table navigation and return swipes to their normal functions, switch to any other reading control. Note that you can add “columns” and “rows” as reading control items, allowing you to switch to the desired item and navigate using up and down swipes. Additionally, you can assign gestures to move to the next or previous row, and to the next or previous column.
It is also possible to start table navigation automatically when a table is focused by enabling the option “Automatically switch to table navigation reading control when entering a table” found in Advanced settings.
Repeat and Spell Last Spoken Phrase Can Now Be Assigned to Gestures
With TalkBack 16.0, it is now possible to assign the existing TalkBack functions Repeat last spoken phrase and Spell last spoken phrase to any available gesture. To do this, open TalkBack settings and select Customize gestures. Then choose the desired gesture and double-tap the function to assign it.
