โDragonโ โ Artist Unknown
The artist was not anonymous but deliberately followed Muqi, the celebrated 13th-century monk and painter who helped establish dragon painting as an East Asian genre. Artists in this school were said to work almost in a trance. Chen Rong, a master of the genre, reportedly created clouds with splashed ink, mist with sprinkled water, then dipped his hat in ink and rubbed it across silk before finishing with a brush.
Unlike evil monsters in European tradition, Chinese dragons were benevolent, powerful beings who ruled water, brought rain, and were linked to the emperor. They were believed to dwell in clouds, mist, and underwater caverns. Dense, dark ink makes this dragon seem to emerge from primordial gloom; its piercing eyes, the paintingโs brightest feature, draw us from the shadows.
The date is unknown. Historians place the work between the 14th and 16th centuries, during either the Mongol Yuan or Chinese Ming dynasty.

**โPortrait of a Ladyโ โ Rogier van der Weyden**
One of the Northern Renaissanceโs most enigmatic beauties, this womanโs name is lost to history. Her luxurious hennin, sheer veil and restrained bearing suggest Burgundian nobility.
Art historians unanimously accept this as the only female portrait painted by van der Weyden himself, not his workshop. A near-exact copy in Londonโs National Gallery is attributed to an apprentice; its drawing is weaker than the Washington original.
Van der Weydenโs restraint is striking: no setting or excess ornament, just her face, veil, folded hands and vivid red belt against a dark dress. In Burgundian fashion, women shaved part of the hairline to lengthen the face, reflecting the severe Gothic ideal of beauty. His economical lines and psychological depth earned him the later title โmaster of lines.โ

โChristiansborg Palace Chapel, Copenhagenโ โ Heinrich Hansen
Price: $17,500
The chapel may be the only part of Christiansborg Palace to survive two fires. The first palace burned in 1794. Architect Christian Frederik Hansen (no relation to the painter) designed a Neoclassical replacement with a dome. The chapel was consecrated in 1826, marking 1,000 years since Christianity came to Denmark.
In 1884, a second fire mysteriously stopped at the walls connecting the chapel to the main building. The chapel survived again and served as a royal venue until a third fire in 1992.
Heinrich Hansen was among Denmarkโs first architectural painters, a little-practiced genre at the time. He traveled widely in Europe, including Italy, documenting palace and church interiors. Art historians note the influence of 17th-century Dutch masters in his meticulous handling of light.
The dome fresco depicts angels by Bertel Thorvaldsen, one of Denmarkโs greatest sculptors.

*The Continence of Scipio* โ Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini
Artists revisited this story of generosity for centuries, from 15th-century Florentine wedding chests to 18th-century canvases.
In 209 BCE, Roman general Scipio Africanus captured New Carthage. Among the captives was a young woman famed for her beauty. Learning she was betrothed to local leader Allucius, Scipio returned her unharmed. Her parents offered gold as ransom, but he gave it to the couple as a wedding gift. Moved, Allucius later joined the Romans with 1,500 cavalrymenโa reminder that mercy can rival the sword.
For centuries, Scipioโs restraint embodied wise leadership. Paintings of the scene adorned town halls and palaces, reminding rulers that true strength lies in justice and self-control, even at the height of power.
