“Angel of Prayer,” 1830s

The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg
Commissioned by the imperial family, the painting depicts a humble Angel absorbed in prayer, eyes lowered, holding a smoking censer and a large church candle.
Neff returned to the subject several times. Artist’s copies are held at the Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts in Tbilisi, Georgia, and in private collections.
