"Autumn Fog. The Red Pond in Moscow", 1871
Russian artist: Lev Lvovich Kamenev (1831โ1886)
Canvas, oil; 68ร113 cm
State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow
Kamenev introduced a new motif to Russian art โ mist enveloping the earth, drifting across the water โ and imbued it with profound metaphorical depth.
In this piece, fog veils both sky and land, yet sunrays pierce through the haze, softly illuminating the water and the foreground. A hazy cloud cover creates a unified atmosphere of light and color, with subtle, elusive transitions in delicate pearly shades of gray, pink, and bluish tones.

"Clitia," 1896
Artist: Sir Frederick Leighton
Canvas, oil; 156ร137 cm
Private collection
In Greek mythology, Clitia was an Oceanid, daughter of Oceanus and the Titaness Theia. According to Ovidโs Metamorphoses (IV, 256โ270), Clitia fell deeply in love with Helios (Apollo), but her affections went unreturned. Consumed by despair, she descended into madness, her gaze forever fixed on the sun as it crossed the sky. Bound to the earth, she ultimately transformed into a heliotrope โ a flower that perpetually turns its face toward the sun (commonly associated with the sunflower).
