Dear all,

I hope you feel tip-top.

As Dr. Rahimi clearly drew a line between expository and narrative texts, the latter intends to tell a story, but the former aims at explaining, describing or presenting some facts and figures.

Narratives are told to not only engage the mind but also the heart (feelings and emotions) and imagination. Also, once you start reading a story, the story can catch your imagination and interest like a magnet. You cannot put it down till you get to the very end. That is, the sequence of events stimulates you to keep reading. Also, in narrative, you are dealing with some characters that you can sympathise or identify with. What about expository texts?!

Which type is more interesting to young language learners?

Once at primary school, i had a very creative teacher. When we did well, he narrated a story to us. Gee, you can't believe it. After ages, i know all the stories he told us by heart. Even, i vividly remember most of his moves and gestures. We left no stone unturned to get him to tell us a story. I've forgotten almost all the stuff transferred to us through expository texts. All the info that i knew by heart. But, the stories have remained alive and echoing for good.

I was the same student; he was also the same teacher, but the texts were different. The language of the texts differed. The stories were told through a language that a kid could identify with, but expository texts were present through the language of mature adults. I didn't like adult language that was serious, empty of emotions and characters, and focused on hammering tons of info into our heads.

To cut this long story short, for the good of our students, we can benefit from narratives as well. We badly need to benefit from various text types or genres.

In the story presented above, i have tried to use words in lesson 1. You can try it out in your classes and see how your students deal with it. In fact, this is a true story about a hunter, Kak Ahmad Azizi, that i adopted and translated into English. You can surf the net and read more about his great deed.

I would like to wrap up with expressing my immense thanks to the teacher who told me stories, Mr. Mahmoudvand.
