โ™จ๏ธ7 tips to help you remember new words:

1โƒฃ Look it up

๐Ÿ”ธIf you come across a word you don't know, try to find out what it means.

๐Ÿ”ธLook up the meaning in a dictionary or ask someone for help to understand it.

๐Ÿ”ธWrite down the meaning in English and in your own language.

2โƒฃ. Use it

๐Ÿ”นIt's easy to remember a new word for a few minutes โ€“ but how can you remember it after a day, or a week?

๐Ÿ”นThe trick is to use it. Use it in a sentence. Try to make a creative, memorable sentence, something you can picture and that will stay in your mind.

๐Ÿ”นWrite down three creative sentences using the new word, then read them out loud. If it helps, you can even draw a picture to help remember the meaning of your sentence.

๐Ÿ”นCan you tell a story using different forms of the word? It's very hard to remember a list of words โ€“ but it's easy to remember a story.

3โƒฃ Try out phrases and different forms

๐Ÿ”ธSometimes it can be easier to learn a phrase than learn each word individually.

๐Ÿ”ธSo if you're learning the word 'focus' you could write down the meanings of 'focus on' and 'out of focus'. What does it mean to 'focus your mind on something' or 'focus your attention on something'. What does it mean if you 'lose your focus'?

๐Ÿ”ธNow that you have the bigger picture, it's easier to understand the full meaning of the word.

๐Ÿ”ธDon't forget to try using it in different tenses as well.

4โƒฃ. Talk about it

๐Ÿ”นWe often remember things better when we learn 'actively'. That means instead of just listening, or just reading, you should be active in trying to speak, read, write and listen.

๐Ÿ”นNow that you know what the word means and you've tried writing it down in different ways, tell a friend about the new word. Sometimes teaching someone else can help you remember, too.

๐Ÿ”นIf you're nervous about trying out a new word, practise at home first. You can even record yourself explaining the new word on your phone before you try telling someone else.

5โƒฃ. Use games and technology

๐Ÿ”ธMany people find playing games is a good way to help build their understanding. You could write words on flashcards and test yourself or a friend to make a sentence with each word.

๐Ÿ”นOr you can try describing the meaning of the word to your friend without showing them the card.

๐Ÿ”ธOr maybe try a role play? That's when you act out a scene, for example if you're trying to learn words related to shopping, you and a friend can take turns pretending to be the shop owner and a customer โ€“ how much is this?

๐Ÿ”นRemember you can play these games with friends anywhere in the world: Use your phone to record your voice or make a video and send it to a friend.

๐Ÿ”ธOr record a conversation with a native speaker so you can listen to it later.

6โƒฃ. Donโ€™t give up

๐Ÿ”นDon't try to do too much too quickly. It's very hard to remember a long list of words. Maybe it's better to learn one word a day, or a list of eight words a week. It all depends how much time you have to practise.

๐Ÿ”นBe realistic about what you can do each day. You don't have to be perfect; remember that even native English speakers make mistakes.

๐Ÿ”นSuccessful learners have clear goals, are motivated, and stick to their plan โ€“ so keep trying!

7โƒฃ. Sleep!
๐Ÿ”ธDid you know that if you sleep within a few hours of learning something new you'll be better at remembering what you've learned?

๐Ÿ”ธSo that's a great reason to practise new words before bed time. Let your brain do the work while you sleep!

๐Ÿ”ธBut don't forget to review your new words and phrases in the morning too.

๐ŸŒ† The Great Quake ๐ŸŒ†

Today, in most industrialized countries in the world, buildings are designed to withstand various, unexpected natural disasters. Safety measures are installed in modern-day designs to help contain the spread of fire, and design engineers make sure newer structures are deliberately planned to hold against the violent shifting of the earth during an unexpected earthquake. However, such deliberate design and planning was not the case during the early 1900s.

On April 18, 1906, in the morning hours of the day, the citizens of San Francisco, California, were witnesses to an earthquake so monumental the tremors were felt as far north as Oregon. Neither the city nor its people were prepared for what would happen next: the devastation of their city.

The actual earthquake only lasted two minutes. Of course, the violent tremors must have seemed much longer to the actual eyewitnesses, but the fires that came after the earthquake lasted for nearly three days. The enormous loss from the disaster included the lives of at least five hundred people, and an estimated three thousand acres of the city were destroyed. This disaster is often called simply the โ€œGreat Quakeโ€ because of the vast destruction that occurred.

โ€‹โ€‹We were given so many prizes
We changed the desert into oasis
We built buildings of different lengths and sizes
And we felt so very satisfied

We bought and bought
We couldn't stop buying
We gave charity to the poor 'cause
We couldn't stand their crying
We thought we paid our dues
But in fact
To ourselves we're just lying

Oh, I'm walking with my head lowered in shame from my place
I'm walking with my head lowered from my race
Yes it's easy to blame everything on the west
When in fact all focus should be on ourselves

Oh, I'm walking with my head lowered in shame from my place
I'm walking with my head lowered from my race
Yes it's easy to blame everything on the west
When in fact all focus should be on ourselves

We were told what to buy and we'd bought
We went to London, Paris and Costa Del Sol
We made show we were seen in the most exlusive shops
Yes we felt so very satisfied

We felt our money gave us infinite power
We forgot to teach our children about history and honor
We didn't have any time to lose
When we were. (were)
So busy feeling so satisfied

I'm walking with my head lowered in shame from my place
I'm walking with my head lowered from my race
Yes it's easy to blame everything on the west
When in fact all focus should be on ourselves

Oh, I'm walking with my head lowered in shame from my place
I'm walking with my head lowered from my race
Yes it's easy to blame everything on the west
When in fact all focus should be on ourselves

We became individuals without a soul
Despite the heat
Our homes felt so empty and cold
To fill the emptiness
We bought and bought
Maybe all the fancy cars
And bling will make us feel satisfied

My dear brother and sister
It's time to change inside
Open your eyes
Don't throw away what's right aside
Before the day comes
When there's nowhere to run and hide
Now ask yourself 'cause Allah's watching you
Is He satisfied?
Is Allah satisfied?
Is Allah satisfied?
Is Allah satisfied?
Oh, I'm walking with my head lowered in shame from my place
I'm walking with my head lowered from my race
Yes it's easy to blame everything on the west
When in fact all focus should be on ourselves
I'm walking with my head lowered in shame from my place
