Finally we got to 666 subs!!! It's time to learn why christians link 666 (or sometimes 616 depending on the translation) to the BBEG of their rule book!
When John was writing the Book of Revelation the Roman Empire had Nero has their caesar (54 - 68 a.D.). Historically Nero isn't remembered as a good guy but recent studies agree that he wasn't any worse than other caesars, and that in 64 a.D. it wasn't him that ordered the great fire of Rome. At the time though he blamed it on the christians living in Rome and in the span of 3 years he ordered the killing of 200 christians, including st. Peter and st. Paul (the first crucified, the latter decapitated).
John didn't really like this decision (go figure 🙄) but he couldn't write about it directly, so he made use of gematria, the practice of assigning numerical value to a name.
Quoting Revelation, 13:18:
“This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666.”
With all this knowledge we now consider how greeks and latins wrote Nero's name: Neron Caesar for the former, Nero Caesar for the latter, respectively NRWN QSR and NRW QSR in hebrew.
Consulting hebrew's gematria table we finally add up the letters and get the final numbers! 666 and 616!
It is interesting how through the history people bended the reality behind these books to scare other people to gain control over them
