Role of newspapers in enriching vocabulary
Before even knowing newspapers' role, first let us know whether fair knowledge on vocabulary is needed in the CSE exam process (This is from the perspective of a person with average vocabulary for a working English)
1. Definitely needed to interpret questions of essay in the right manner.
E.g., Philosophy of wantlessness is Utopian, while materialism is a chimera - Essay UPSC 2021
E.g., History repeats itself, first as a tragedy, second as a farce - Essay UPSC 2021
2. Needed in understanding the comprehensions in CSAT paper
3. Needed in certain GS prelims questions too.
E.g., In a year, the highest levels of ozone pollution occur during the periods of inclement weather - UPSC GS 2022
4. Needed in interpreting certain GS mains questions
E.g., Besides the welfare schemes, India needs deft management of inflation and unemployment to serve the poor and the underprivileged sections of the society. Discuss - UPSC GS 2 2022
5. Understanding case studies in GS IV Ethics
6. Of course in Personality Test to express yourself in the best manner as you are and as you think.
6 problems one solution - Newspaper. In fact, newspaper is the least time consuming, easiest and the best way to develop one's vocabulary and command over English. Therefore everyday underline new words and phrases while reading newspaper and later search for the same in Google. Check for the example sentences to know the right context where those words and phrases can be used. Incrementally, you will see perceptible change in your language over the time which will also play a vital role in Essay paper and Personality Test.
PS: This is not to say that CSE is only for English pundits. UPSC is always a level playing field for all. Objective of this post is to say that there is ample scope for everyone to improve their vocabulary as per the demands of the exam
