๐Ÿ”ฅโ€˜Dry Powderโ€™ Surplus

๐Ÿš€At the end of Q1 2024, dry powder reached a record-high surplus of over $300 billion. This figureโ€”also known as uncommitted capitalโ€” reflects the remnants of booming fundraising in 2021 and 2022, and the halt in capital spend since that time, as well as a sign of economic conditions.

๐Ÿ’ปA search for โ€œdry powder capitalโ€ on the AlphaSense platform shows a significant increase in document activity over the last 90 days, as this trend remains top of mind for VC investors.

๐Ÿ’ซAccording to a recent EY survey, 93% of CEOs said they plan to increase or maintain investment in corporate venture capital funds in 2024, signaling an expanding pool of VC capital and potential offramp to M&A activity.

๐Ÿ‘•Sustainable Start-Ups Gaining Momentum

๐Ÿ’ปVenture capital investors are increasingly setting their sights on sustainable and climate tech start-ups. One VC sustainability investor in particular set forth a plan to reduce 10% of global carbon emissions by 2035 by investing in 100ร—100 companies.

๐ŸŽฅThese are sustainability start-ups designed to mitigate 100 megatons of emissions in ten years while generating $100 million in revenue.

๐Ÿ‘ŒAs the world evolves to adopt sustainability more holistically, it is no surprise that many lucrative, purpose-driven enterprises have sprouted as a result.

๐Ÿ’ซSustainability has proven itself an evergreen investment theme rather than a passing trend. Just as ESG investing has long taken precedence with institutions and public companies, sustainability-focused investments are gaining momentum among VC investors as well.

๐Ÿ”ตInvest Europe has released a fresh report on the state of the European venture capital industry

The main conclusion is that the states were the most important investors in VC funds in 2023. Only the share of state revenues has grown in a year-on-year ratio. ๐Ÿ’ซ

๐Ÿ™‚The second and third places after the states are occupied by private investors and family offices. And the share of corporate money in funds fell by 16% compared to the previous year.

๐Ÿ’ซAccording to the report, 278 European funds raised money in 2023. This is the lowest value since 2019.

โญ๏ธSigma is building a suite of collaborative data analytics tools

๐Ÿ“ŸIn 2014, Jason Frantz and Rob Woollen co-founded Sigma Computing, a platform that overlays data stored in data platforms such as Snowflake and Google BigQuery with a spreadsheet-like interface for data visualization and analytics.

๐Ÿ’ปOut of the gate (in 2014), Sigma only offered a set of basic business intelligence and analytics tools to connect to a customerโ€™s outside databases.

๐Ÿ’ปSigma Computing CEO, Mike Palmer believes the key to Sigmaโ€™s success in the face of stiff competition like Tableau and Microsoftโ€™s Power BI has been a continued focus on creating data analytics tools with a low barrier to entry.

๐Ÿ“ŸToday, Sigmaโ€™s product suite consists of tools that let users analyze data โ€œin-placeโ€ in databases containing up to billions of records. Customers can tap the platform to build dashboards, reports, workflows and apps without data leaving its source.

๐Ÿš€With Sigmaโ€™s massive war chest โ€” $581 million in venture capital โ€” and a staff of around 450, the company plans to grow its operations in the U.S. and internationally and invest in AI, specifically integrations with generative AI platforms like OpenAIโ€™s to let users ask questions about their companyโ€™s data.

๐Ÿ’กVenture orgs form alliance to standardize data collection

๐Ÿ“งSeven venture capital and startup organizations focused on diversity within tech have announced the Diversity Data Alliance, a commitment to standardizing the way that data is collected and shared.

๐Ÿ’กThis is especially important for marginalized founders, who still receive little to no venture funding.

๐Ÿ“งData transparency remains a pressing issue within venture for people looking to better track where and to whom money is allocated. Many firms already privately compile background information on their founders, but that data can be skewed when publicly shared without insight into how the data was collected.

๐Ÿ™‚The Alliance hopes to simplify this process by creating a framework that firms can use to gather information about founders and funders. It hopes to also work toward creating a centralized data pool to better track and understand funding trends in the industry.

๐Ÿ’ซThe Alliance told TechCrunch that it hopes to look at this data to find ways that could help increase capital allocation to underrepresented founders, with the intention of releasing a report with centralized data. It is building out privacy and security measures, in addition to fundraising for a database that can store this information.

๐Ÿ“ˆHow does the speed of response to emails affect the success of fundraising?

โญ๏ธAdam Shuaib, Managing Partner at Episode1 (E1) fund, wanted to explore the relationship between the speed of founders' email responses and their subsequent success in fundraising rounds. Specifically, he looked at how quickly founders raising seed rounds responded to emails.

๐Ÿ’ซTo investigate this, Adam analyzed data from the fund's CRM on startups that had at least three email exchanges with the fund between 2012 and 2020. Correspondence after 2020 was excluded to ensure every startup had an equal time window for fundraising. The analysis included 1,500 companies.

โญ๏ธFor each company, Adam calculated the median response time (in hours) for the founder's first three emails with the fund. The success criterion for a company was whether it successfully completed Round A funding in the future, a milestone reached by approximately 10% of the companies in the sample.

๐Ÿ’ซThe main conclusion - the founders who were able to raise the round And later responded twice as quickly to investor emails than those who could not find financing.

โญ๏ธData Driven VC surveyed 276 foundations, which startup databases they use

๐Ÿ“ŸCrunchbase is the leader with the cheapest subscription price on the market. The most expensive Pitchbook is in second place. In third place is Dealroom, which has the highest percentage of coverage in terms of companies.

๐Ÿ’ซAt the same time, most of the information about founders and investors is on Pitchbook. He is also the leader in covering deals.

๐Ÿ“ŸBut the results of the study show that Dealroom has made the most powerful leap since 2019. And now it has almost caught up with the longโ€”standing market leaders - Pitchbook and Crunchbase.

๐Ÿ’กIn general, the database market for VC and startups has been developing strongly lately. I wrote recently that over the past few months I have talked to at least three projects that are building solutions to help investors.

๐Ÿ™‚OpenseedVC, which backs operators in Africa and Europe starting their companies, reaches first close of $10M fund

Founder-market fit is one of the most crucial factors in a startupโ€™s success, and operators (someone involved in the day-to-day operations of a startup) turned founders have an almost unfair advantage in finding that fit. #๏ธโƒฃ

๐Ÿ’ซThe same principle applies somewhat to operator VCs (firms typically launched by former startup founders). While thereโ€™s no definitive proof that operator VCs make better investors, recent research does indicate that founders and operators who become VCs are significantly more successful at backing companies than traditional investor VCs.

#๏ธโƒฃData shows that a lack of expertise and business acumen in founders contributes to failed VC investments.

๐Ÿ’ซOperator VCs have a long history in Silicon Valley. Still, their adoption is less widespread in Europe and Africa: only 8% of VC firms in Europe and Africa are led by former operators, compared to nearly half in the US. OpenseedVC is applying the model in Africa and Europe with a new fund.

๐Ÿ’ก firm, which plans to be the first check in startups launched by operators across both regions, has reached the first close of its $10 million angel-style early-stage fund.

โšก๏ธSeekOut, a recruiting startup last valued at $1.2 billion, lays off 30% of its workforce

โšซ๏ธSeekOut, an eight-year-old recruiting startup that uses AI to find candidates, cut about 30% of its workforce this past Thursday, TechCrunch has learned.

โญ๏ธโ€œLately, we have been spending roughly $2 to earn $1, and this last fiscal year, we incurred significant cash burn,โ€ SeekOutโ€™s CEO Anoop Gupta and CTO Aravind Bala wrote in a letter to employees. โ€œUnfortunately, to put us on a sustainable trajectory, we must make significant employee reductions.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฃThis is the second time the Seattle-based startup has had layoffs. SeekOut laid off 16 employees in October, or about 7% of its workforce at that time, GeekWire reported. After its October staff cuts, the company had around 200 employees, according to the report.

โญ๏ธSeekOut was last valued at over $1.2 billion in January 2022, when it raised a $115 million in a Series C round led by Tiger Global. At that time, the companyโ€™s revenue was growing 300% a year and its annual recurring revenue (ARR) ranged between $25 million and $50 million.

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธETF Partners raises โ‚ฌ285M for climate startups that will be effective quickly โ€” not 20 years down the road

โšก๏ธWhile many climate investors focus their efforts on breakthrough, deep-tech solutions, Patrick Sheehan at ETF Partners has other ideas.

#๏ธโƒฃIโ€™ve actually got nothing against carbon capture and storage, apart from the fact itโ€™s probably going to be commercialized too late, he told TechCrunch. Instead, Sheehan and his colleagues are diving into more software-centric companies that promise to still move the needle.

๐Ÿ’ซโ€œThere are those who say thatโ€™s a cop out,โ€ Sheehan said. โ€œThe more I look at it, the more I completely disagree with that notion. We need to find companies we can scale rapidly to have an impact within the lifetime of a venture capital fund. Thatโ€™s 10 years maximum.โ€

โšก๏ธItโ€™s a sentiment that has helped ETF Partners raise a new, oversubscribed โ‚ฌ285 million fund, the firmโ€™s fourth.

๐Ÿ’ซThe firm was founded in 2006, and it has ridden a series of bull and bear markets. Until 2018, Sheehan describes his work as having been โ€œmore evangelical.โ€ Since then, he has found limited partners to be much more receptive to climate tech. โ€œItโ€™s become much more of a good institutional product.โ€

๐Ÿš€Alchemistโ€™s latest batch puts AI to work as accelerator expands to Tokyo, Doha
#VentureNews

๐Ÿ”ŽAlchemist Accelerator has a new pile of AI-forward companies demoing their wares today, if you care to watch, and the program itself is making some international moves into Tokyo and Doha. Read on for our picks of the batch.

๐Ÿ’ซChatting with Alchemist CEO and founder Ravi Belani ahead of demo day about this cohort, it was clear that ambitions for AI startups have contracted, and thatโ€™s not a bad thing.

๐ŸŒโ€œThe cost of building a basic LLM is prohibitively high; you get into the hundreds of millions of dollars just to get it out. The question is, as a startup, how do you compete?โ€ Belani said. โ€œVCs donโ€™t want wrappers around LLMs. Weโ€™re looking for companies where thereโ€™s a vertical play, where they own the end user and thereโ€™s a network effect and lock-in over time.โ€

๐Ÿ”ŽNo early-stage startup today is at all likely to become the next OpenAI or Anthropic โ€” their lead is too huge right now in the domain of foundational large language models.

๐Ÿ™‚ Are AI Companies Valued Differently Than Non-AI Companies?

The Theory AI Index of publicly traded companies continue to outperform more classical software companies since we published the index earlier this year. โ—๏ธ

๐Ÿ“ŽAcross the five most important metrics, AI companiesโ€™ valuation correlates isnโ€™t that much different than non-AI companies.

๐Ÿ”ต Revenue growth, sales efficiency, & cash flow are all relatively similar. So is net income margin, although the AI correlate is about half. The only one that stands out is gross margin, where the correlate is mildly negative.

๐Ÿ”ต So while AI companies do fetch a premium, public market investors view them as software companies, even if they do have robots furiously typing away inside their data centers.

๐Ÿ’กMassive Acquisitions in Software Startups

In the last decade, the total number of venture backed software M&A by count has remained relatively constant. The black line shows the linear trend across US venture backed companies with disclosed values of $50m or more. ๐Ÿš€

๐Ÿ’ซThe average & median counts by year total 58 & 55 respectively.

If there are any increases, they tend to be in the bigger acquisitions of $500 million or more - although the sample size there is sufficiently small to conclude the trend is significant. ๐Ÿš€

๐Ÿ’ซNevertheless, there are huge differences between the total value created by software M&A annually. The least productive year produced $3.25b in M&A value and the most productive $59.7b, a 18.4x swing.

Multi-billion dollar acquisitions, the blue bars, are the largest contributors to this swing. In 2014, 2016, 2020, 2021, these big mergers drove the figures into the tens of billions.๐Ÿ’ฅ
