Protonmail's CEO said it was forced to cooperate with authorities after a Swiss warrant was issued – ProtonMail logging IP information on the account, which was subsequently handed over to French police and an arrest was duly made.

French police registered a request for the members details to a Swiss court (home of ProtonMail) aided by Europol – which was approved despite not being subject to French or EU requests.

The data was requested as part of a broader investigation into a group of climate activists occupying several apartments and commercial spaces in Paris – one member of the group using jmn18@protonmail. com in online postings.

CEO, Andy Yen, said on Monday: “The prosecution in this particular case was very aggressive. Unfortunately, this is a pattern we have increasingly seen in recent years around the world.”

ProtonMail forced to collect an activist’s IP address in police investigation

Switzerland-based email provider ProtonMail said it was forced to log the IP address of one of its customers after it received a legally binding order from the Swiss government that it couldn’t legally appeal or decline.

The incident, which came to light over the weekend, has caused some unrest among the company’s users as ProtonMail had boasted numerous times in its public marketing campaigns about its no-log policies.
