We are pleased to announce that the UCLA Master of Quantum Science and Technology (MQST) Degree Program is now accepting applications for Fall 2026 !

MQST is a one-year in-person graduate professional degree program designed to prepare students for careers in quantum science in private industry, national labs, and government agencies.

MQST is part of the UCLA Department of Physics & Astronomy with curriculum and teaching support from the Center for Quantum Science and Engineering and associated departments in the division of physical sciences and the school of engineering.

The program curriculum is tailored to students and early career professionals looking to enter the quantum industry workforce with a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will enable them to seek opportunities with focused intent and present as attractive and highly prepared candidates to employers.

MQST is now accepting applications for next years cohort to begin in September 2026.

“Quantum hackers” make great headlines, but most of what people imagine isn’t how it works.

🔹 The myth: Quantum computers will instantly break all encryption overnight.

🔹 The reality: They will eventually crack today’s public-key cryptography, but only once they’re powerful, stable, and scalable. That’s still at least a year away, but more likely 3-7.

The real threat now is harvest-now, decrypt-later attacks, where data stolen today is stored until quantum computers can unlock it.
That’s why post-quantum encryption is already being deployed, not to fix a future crisis, but to stop a delayed one.

Quantum hacking isn’t science fiction.
It’s a slow-moving revolution in cybersecurity, unfolding quietly in research labs and standards bodies.

In short: quantum won’t break the internet overnight, but it’s already rewriting how we secure it.

A new study published this week demonstrates that D-Wave’s Advantage2 annealing quantum computer can outperform classical methods, as well as IBM quantum computers, in solving multi-objective optimization problems.

Multi-objective optimization problems involve balancing many, often conflicting, goals such as cost, speed, and efficiency. These mathematical problems are central to real-world decision-making in industries such as logistics, manufacturing, and retail. As the number of objectives in the problem grows, it becomes increasingly challenging for a classical computer to solve.

A recent IBM study of “multi-objective optimization” problems found that gate model quantum computers could match classical computing methods.

Our scientists put the same problems to the test on D-Wave's Advantage2 annealing quantum computer, and it turned out to be 1,000 times faster than both classical and quantum techniques from the IBM study, while also delivering better-quality solutions.
