By the early 20th century, every U.S. community with a population of more than 2,500 had its own electric rail system and tram lines connecting cities to one another. The longest route stretched over 1,500 kilometers, and the average speed of a streetcar was 130 km/h.
A 1974 report by U.S. Senate Counselor Bradford Snell presented evidence that from 1936 to 1950, General Motors, in conjunction with Firestone Tire, Standard Oil of California, and Phillips Petroleum, created front holding companies through which they bought up tram lines and shut them down.
As a result, the trams were replaced by smelly, slow buses. These buses were manufactured by none other than General Motors. And the inconvenient schedules, cramped conditions, and stuffy interiors forced affluent city residents to buy private cars from General Motors.
