Happy Doctor's day to all DoctorsπππππΊππ©Ίπ©Έπ
*Assault on Doctors. Do's and don'ts*
Few years ago, I have delivered a talk at Indian Medical Association & CMC Vellore alumnus group of Doctors conference in Hyderabad on burning topic " Assault on Doctors"
*Reasons*
1 Family Doctors concept is getting extinct and commercial angle has come in Medical service.
2 Generalist vs Specialist issue. Self medication by patient and approaching Specialist. If no results then hatred against Medical fraternity increases
3 Lack of communication between Doctors and patient or his relatives. Communication subject lacking in Medical science syllabus.
4 Operation successful thanks God, operation failed blame the Doctors attitude on increase in society.
5 In peace time , maintaining good relationship with society in general and patient in particular by Doctors is missing so in crisis situation if any eventuality happen then patient's relatives claims it as medical negligence and Assault Doctors or indulge in vandalism of campus, establishment.
6 Instead of timely approaching Police , many Doctors indulge in financial settlement with patient relatives if that is not successful then by the time they call Police damage is taking place.
*Solutions*
1Doctors should Sweat more in peace so that in crisis they will face less problems.
2 Communication to be improved in case of lack of that skills. Specially empathic listening to patient, reassuring his relatives and if matter is not in Doctors competence then in time they should refer patients to another Doctors.
3 In Police case for negligence FIR is booked under 304 A IPC for rash and negligence act causing death. 2 years punishment. After FIR Police send case sheets , PME reports to team of Doctors appointed by District Medical & Health officer. Depending on the advice of this panel only Police finalise the investigation so Doctors should not have fear if they have followed correct procedure.
4 Doctors should maintain cordial relationship with local Police, have some private security, install CCTV cameras and allow limited number of patients relatives to meet in fix timing.
5 In cases booked under Doctor's protection act 2010 of Maharashtra hardly any convictions are there. 1st of all such cases should be tried in fast track court so that chances of convictions are more.
Except for Maharashtra there is no state where stringent laws are there for protection of Doctors.
In Maharashtra since 2010 this act is there but hardly any conviction. Delay in trial, hostile witnesses, compromise out side the court are reasons. So no fear of law.
*Thanks god if Patient survived*. *Blame the Doctor if Patient is no more*
Is general psyche of Society.
Dead body politics happens at the time of final settlement of bills in Hospitals.
Relatives, political person, rowdy elements all gather putting pressure on reduction of bill amount & indulge in violence if their undue demand not fulfilled.
On humanitarian grounds Doctors are ready to help even in giving discount in bills but blackmail tactics hurts ego of Doctors & things become adverse from both sides.
Finally Police gets a call when serious law and order issue takes place.
In my area I give top priority to Hospital/ Private practitioners such issues and ensure that they will get relief in time.
Escalated medical cost of treatment, prolonged admission in ICU, undue Tests are also some reasons for assault on Doctors.
